64 bit plugins curiosity question

Post by JoeB »

I have PSP X7 and X9 32 bit and 64 bit installed. I just haven't gotten around to the effort of customizing X9 32 bit so use X7. But, like many PSP users, I use 32 bit because there are so many more plugins that don't have 64 bit versions. So I did some searching. And, from what I've found, there don't seem to be very many plugins at all that only work with 64 bit systems and graphic programs (i.e., most plugins that have 64 bit versions also offer 32 bit versions).

So my question is this: Can some of you PSP users tell me what 64 bit plugins that are actually useful you actually use and that might be worth checking out that don't have 32 bit versions and that work with at least PSP X9 and perhaps earlier versions like X7? Other than the fact that I know a 64 bit program - and some 64 bit plugins - might work faster than the 32 bit versions, I'm just wondering if there really are worthwhile plugins to have that are only 64 bit that might make it worthwhile to have and sometimes switch to the 64 bit version of PSP to access that specific plugin. AND I realize that "worthwhile to have" is a personal preference depending on workflow, so I really would like to hear of any plugins anybody finds useful that are 64 bit only.

EDIT:
Now that I have reflected, I'd also be happy to hear about 32bit plugins that also have 64 bit versions. :-)

All info gratefully appreciated! :-)

I think your question shows that there can be a fundamental difference of opinion regarding image editing workflow.

My preference is to always work in 64-bit. Therefore, when given the option of installing 32- or 64- bit versions of a plugin, I'll choose to only install the 64-bit version because I always work in the 64-bit version of my image editor of choice. When there is no 64-bit version of a plugin (such as the KPT Collection), that's when I'll send the relevant image layer to the 32-bit version of my editor for processing with one of the KPT tools, returning the processed image layer back to the 64-bit editor. This seems to be the opposite of your workflow.

Granted, I do not need to use plugins that much (and have only about 50 total installed, counting the 32-bit and 64-bit versions as separate plugins), but I don't really see the need to work primarily in a 32-bit version of my image editor.

The reason I work mostly in 32bit PSP is because that's where most of my plugins reside being that they are 32bit only. So if I worked with 64bit PSP I'd be switching to the 32bit version much more often to access a plugin than doing it the other way around, given that so far there don't seem to be very many 64 bit plugins available, even plugins that have both 32 and 64 bit capability.

Perhaps you could tell me which plugins you do have that are accessible with 64bit PSP, even if they do also have a 32 bit version? So far the only ones I'm aware of are Nik Collection, Topaz Labs, and Athentech Perfectly Clear.

Yes, that makes perfect sense and is a valid reason for you to first reach for your 32-bit version of PSP.

Don't know about PSP, but in my image editor of choice, I've got the following 64-bit plugins:

Of course, there are the Fast Fourier Transform plugins we've discussed in other threads.

There are also the Russell Cottrell filters:

And a couple of Redfield plugins and a couple of Richard Rosenman plugins.

Like I said, I don't use plugins very much. I've found that Perfectly Clear and Topaz Labs (as well as most of the Nik Collection) duplicate what I can already do in PhotoLine.

P.S., I forgot about the digiMarc plugins. I successfully used the 64-bit version. However, I no longer have it installed because the free plugin is quite useless and I'm not ready to purchase a subscription.

I rarely use 32bit PSP, preferring it to the 64bit version. This latter version only allows you to use plugins/filters than are 64bit. All old plugins you will find are for 32bit and therefore won't work in PSP 64bit. Depending on how many times you need plugins will depend on your use of 32bit. There are many plugins now available for 64bit, Eye Candy, Topaz Labs, Perfectly Clear, NIK collection and Particleshop. There are many more, you just need to search for them. Ask yourself, how many plugins do I really need?
