Matte Finish

Post by claudiaLearner »

Hello,

Can someone tell me please how to turn a picture into one with a Matte finish, or not glossy using Paint Shop Pro? I uploaded an image to show what I mean.

I don't know how well this will work.

1) Create a new layer above the image you want to add the Matte to.
2) Fill it with black
3) Adjust -> Add/Remove Noise -> Add Noise
4) Set amount to 100%, make sure monochrome is selected, it shouldn't matter if you use random, uniform, or Gaussian. I used Gaussian
5) Set layer blend mode to Overlay
6) Set layer opacity somewhere between 3 and 10 %

EDIT:
Other tutorials I'm finding online are for Photoshop, and those just use curves adjustments. Or Curves with Hue/Saturation/Lightness adjustments. So mine may be a terrible method. xD

My suggestion :
- create an empty layer above the image
- fill the empty layer with pure white
- modify the Opacity of the layer to value 14 (approx.)
You will get a result similar to what you want.

Or Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Levels move the middle slider left to 104
or Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Brightness/Contrast move the brightness slider to 30
or Adjust > Hue and Saturation > Hue/Saturation/Lightness move the lightness slider to 13.

Theay all look similar as well unless I am missing some detail in the smaller images posted.

One problem in determining the best approach is that the OP didn't tell us what the final output was meant to be - i.e., digital display or print display.
Displaying digitally on a monitor type device will make even the "matte" effect look pretty good but generally somewhat subdued in saturation and color, but with the emissive light it still looks close to the glossy image. If printing a sharp, colored saturated image on matte paper the result, when viewing glossy and matte versions together will more obviously show the difference because one is viewing reflected light.

The easy assumption is that the OP wants to display digitally, so needs a matte finish look compared to a glossy finish look. Otherwise the image would just be printed on either glossy or matte photo paper and take on the effect produced by the different papers. But it would still help to have this confirmed.
