closed caption appearing

CC---?
I am trying to work editing a downloaded movie from Netflix.
The movie plays fine inside the program except in editing, the movie
Screen is displaying closed captioning right across the bottom of the screen!
I must have done or touched something inside of the program to cause this
But in anger and frustration I have used the cleaner and reloaded the program
Twice all with the same affect; does anyone know what or how I can rid myself
Of this problem?

I also capture segments from that source, occasionally. And, I also encountered your situation - the captions. So, I went back into the movie, turned the captioning off, went to full-screen viewing, and re-captured what I wanted.
Note: I found that if I don't rewind their movie back far enough, my display remains very blurry until enough data has been cached. And, I have to start capturing video approximately 10-seconds BEFORE it gets to the point where the data is that I want captured. That's because even with captions off, the movie will still have a "ghost image" of their 1/3rd screen movie information bar showing at the bottom of the screen. You'll have to wait until the movie is playing clearly (cleanly) before capturing.
-- Works for me.

There seems to be some confusion here so I will
Attempt to explain what I am doing and how. I’m
Streaming directly from Netflix with a product called
“play on”. This program puts a documentary or what
Ever I chose from Netflix directly to my hard drive in
Mp4 format. The Video Studio can handle that format
Without problems, save for the one I am trying to correct,
I.e. the closed caption issue.

However, on further investigation on my part, I found
that the file is doing this from some way inside of the
Program. In other words it is being encoded from play on.
Not Video Studio but I was hoping VS could handle this but
again with further reading on this forum, I find that this is not
the case. Until the folks at PlayOn can solve this codeac problem
I’m stuck editing anything from them. I do thank you for
taking your time in responding to my query.

But is closed captioning on or off within Netflix itself?

Hello Ken!

I don't know where to look in Netflix or this "PlayOn?" program.
Never had a problem but now its there. I just
checked the Nexflix on our family tv and when I booted to
Netflix the CC was on? How I don't know but I guess
muy next move is try a new recording and see what happens.
I will report my findings and thank you for your prompt attention.

I'm not exactly sure but, I believe that when you begin watching movies (Netflix 'streaming' movies), which are in a foreign language by default, Netflix will use "your" preferred language for captioning, automatically. You can toggle that option On/Off whenever you want to --even while watching the movie. I view their movies on my computer monitor in real-time. When I mouse-over the bottom 1/3rd of my display, the Netflix "info bar' pops-up. It's on that bar that I can pause, fast-forward, view various episodes within the streaming movie, and --change captioning languages or just turn captioning to "Off."

Re: closed caption appearing/Convert Step Got Some Problems

Post by bill in pa »

The problem was the Netflix setting. Somehow CC was turned on.
Solving one problem sometimes expose another. I now get this note from inside
the program trying to create a DVD. “Convert Step Got Some Problems”! Again
this is a new one for me. Any Help please? This particular movie is 2 hours and
19 minutes long could this be the problem? I cannot remember doing one video
this long. Thanks old friend for the extra help!

I wish I had the answer to your situation. The only things I can suggest are:
-- Read the documentation provided by "Play On"
-- Contact the "Play On" company or forum. if they have one. Or, call their support if they have a number.
-- Or, try capturing shorter segments (maybe 30-min segments) instead of the entire 2-hour+ movie. Maybe "Play-On" cannot handle decoding that entire session? Just guessing.

Then, load each of your mp4 segments into VS. I'd suggested trying to work with just one 30-min capture first. If that one won't work in VS, then you've saved a lot of time. heh heh.

Just a final thought.... the issue you're having may be related to the fact that the movie is blocked by copyright protection to prevent it from being copied?

You get this message when VS is trying to convert non-DVD-compatible video as part of the burning process. In this case you are evidently putting your mp4 directly into the burner and letting the burning process convert it to DVD-compatible mpeg-2. This will usually work, but sometimes it doesn't for various reasons. In this case I would say that it almost undoubtedly relates to the length of the movie and the bitrate specified in the burning module for the conversion.

2 hours 19 minutes is indeed long for a single layer DVD. The bitrate would have to be below 4000 kbps to fit all of it onto a single layer disc, even using Dolby audio. And I'd have to add that the quality of the DVD's video would not be particularly good: even at 4000 kbps, quality would be no better than you'd get on an old VHS tape. (With video, depending on the codec/format, the lower the bitrate, the lower the quality.)

When you look in the burning module's second icon in the bottom left of screen, you will see the properties being used to convert your mp4. By default it is normally set at 8000 kbps, but this is only good for a video of around an hour, though gives high quality. You can adjust the bitrate down to, say, around 3800 for your mp4 to be converted to mpeg-2 which will fit on a single layer DVD. Your aim will be to produce a video clip of no more than 4.3 GB which is all that a single layer DVD can hold.

But an alternative workflow would have you first convert the mp4 to DVD-compatible mpeg-2 in the *Editing* module instead of as part of the burning process. So put your mp4 in the Editing timeline, do any edits, but then, instead of jumping straight to "DVD" as the Share option, instead choose the file output options, and Custom. Choose MPEG-2 as the format within that, and make sure the properties are standard definition (720 x 480 for NTSC, Upper Field First, bitrate of 3800 kbps, and Dolby audio.) Give it a name and press Start. A new mpeg-2 will be produced which should be under 4.3 GB.

Now start a new project -- don't worry about giving it a name. The objective is just to clear the timeline. Then go to Share and select DVD. When the burning module opens, its timeline should be empty. If anything is there, delete it, and then go to Add Media in the top left of screen and add your new mpeg-2. Check in that second icon in the bottom left that "Do not convert compliant MPEG files" is ticked. Then make your menu if you want one and proceed to burn the disc.

Hi Brian,
I took the liberty of printing those instructions out for my notebook;
and thank you for them! Between emails I put the entire mp4 file
into my video convertor and converted it to a wmv. Just to be on the
safe side I did some editing to it and chopped out twenty minutes
in order to take the time down to two hours and burned the project without
further issue.
The only other problem I have is getting the program started, you could
order take-out until it starts! It is very slow but after it starts up its fine. Why this
is, I do not know but have used the cleaner file each time I reloaded it and still have the problem.
These reloads took place because of reloading the entire machine.

Best regards and thanks for all of your help.

Why did you convert to wmv and not directly to mpg? That is an extra unnecessary step since the wmv has to be converted to mpg before burning anyway. That extra step could also reduce the quality of the video.

What do you mean by "other problem I have is getting the program started"? Do you see the splash screen for a long time? What version of VideoStudio are you running? If VS X9 then that was a big complaint from users.

Hi Canuck,
Thanks for responding to my questions. I changed the format
on a wim to see if the program would
allow the editing; it did not, and the 2 hour and twenty-minute movie time
was just too big as Brian had anticipated it would be.

Version VS 9 Pro version 19.0.0.200 64 bit, is what I am
running and yes you are also correct on the opening splash
screen, it feels like it takes a week to open! Aside from that
I still think it’s the best editor on the market at any price!
I’ve been editing for a very long time and have used, at least once,
all the big names out there but I still come back to it. I’ve never
found anything faster and its accuracy is superior.

Again, nice to met you and thank you for the response,
