Convert step got some problems UVS X7

Post by jcsaba »

During burning of a 92 minute video into DVD UVS X7 stopped and sent this message: "Convert step got some problems (257:0:0)" The burning process created the .mpg files successfully, but my UVS X7 seems to be unable to create menu. (Out of the "MENU_RESOURCE" folder, two ac3 files - the music under the menu - and the" auto fade out first play to menu" have been created.) This is clearly evidenced by the fact that launching the authoring process itself only by inserting the earlier created mpg files was practically not possible, the process stopped in a couple of seconds.
Do you have any suggestion ? I made several attempts with the same result.

I notices the some menu templates from earlier UVS cannot be imported into UVS X7 (I use Win 10 64 bit)

I experienced the same problem when trying the creation of the same video with UVSX5: No menu creation only rendering the video footage to produce mpg files. Earlier I used UVSX5 successfully to create menu under Win 7. This is the first time I try to make a DVD film with menu under Win 10. Both UVSX5 and UVSX7 seem not to work under Win 10 when DVD authoring is required in addition to video rendering which was OK several times.

Recent developments to my creating chapters problem:
I installed VideoStudio X9 to avoid possible conflicts of UVS 7 and earlier with Win 10. The problem remained: when VSX9 started to create DVD menu after successful rendering and conversion of AVI files into mpg files, it stopped again with the same message: "Convert step got some problems [257:0:0]" . The process stops just when the progress bar shows converting (menu) page 002 or 003 out of the total 3 pages under the menu. It creates the clip for fading out of introductory video into the the first menu page, and two sound files for the music of the first and second page of the menu. When I approached Corel support with my problem, they just turned me down saying that VSX7 is an old version and is not compatible with Win 10. Now as VSX9 produces the same problem, I have no idea at all how to tackle this issue. Does this code or number [257:0:0] hint what the causes may be?

Hi jcsaba

First I would change your workflow by creating a compliant Mpeg2 video file of your project.
How long is your project? If over 70 minutes you will have to reduce the data rate to keep the file size below 4.3 Gb to fit a disc.

Oh...I notice your project is 90 minutes long, for that your data rate should be 6000 kbps.

Do you use chapter points within your project? If not and there are any green triangles at the top of timeline, remove them.

With your project open on the edit timelines go to Share – mpeg2, the default template will create a new Mpeg2 video file suitable to burn a DVD.
This new video will burn to disc without any further rendering, so the Convert Title seen in the burner module will not happen.

To Burn a disc
Start a new project – the timelines are empty
Share – Disc – DVD opens the burner module.
Add Video – icon top left – browse for your new compliant video file.

For this test create a simple menu using one of the templates provided with the program.
If you use your own sound files, use Wav files, otherwise use the ones provided by the program.
On the last page choose to “Create a Disc Image” deselect Create to Disc.
The convert step “Convert title” is not required” The process should start with Create Menu
The new ISO file can be played using VLC Media Player.

How far do you get with that process.?

Create Motion Menu used to cause problems for some (many?) users when converting the menu to video, so disabling that used to stop the problem.

If you are also using first clip as an introduction before the menu, again, while that should work, have you tried not doing that but simply going straight into the menu?

Hi Ken and Trevor
Thanks for your help.
I always deselect motion menu as this would increase the size of the menu very much.
I have used first clip as an introduction with no problem so far since I purchased my first UVS 11.0 cca 9 years ago. I now try to delete the introductory short video.
As the video footage is cca 90 minutes, I apply lower bit rate. As written, the rendering process takes place successfully with the result of 2 mepg files (the introductory video and the main title video) totaling cca 4,2 GB. As suggested by Trevor
I also tried the work flow of creating first mpeg files and then authoring the DVD with menu. For that, I used the mpeg files created by VS7 during the unsuccessful rendering-and-authoring module as well as separately created mpeg file under share phase: the process started with the creation of menu and in a couple of seconds I bumped into the same problem: "Convert step got some problems [257:0:0]"
I create chapters during the burning (share) module before menu creation in both types of process: when rendering and authoring are separated it means that chapters are made under authoring on the mpeg file of the main title. When creating iso file, I , of course, deselect Create to disc and select Create disc image. As I experienced crash of VSX7 when using menu templates imported from older versions (which was possible earlier, but I guess now it might be related to the 64 bit version vs 32 bit version), I use template offered by VSX7 and customize layout, frames and buttons. If this forum allows, I might attach a short video or some photos about the process when I try to author already existing mpeg files to DVD iso file with menu.
As sound files under the menu, I usually use mp3 files, there has been no problem with them so far.

Hi

Its is good that you can burn a DVD without Convert title, that the process starts with Convert Menu.
As its failing there it does appear to be the menus you are using.

Using older Menu Templates is not a good idea as the newer templates may have taken on more options.
I would suggest you only use the templates provided by the program.
Although as far as I know little has changed with templates back to X4, so copying those to X10 is probably a waste of time.

I assume you realise there are additional menu Templates available from the Corel Guide – Do More, two are available one for DVD and the other for Avchd/Bluray.

Then there is an option to Customise all templates and save to your Favourites folder allowing you to use those again.

OK
First try burning the disc to ISO with no menu, deselect that from the first window.
I would think that will create ok.
Then try using the standard template, you do not say which type of menu you are using, by default uses Smart Scenes, but Thumbnail and Text menus are available, which use much less memory and create faster.

If the burn process completes ok when using the programs templates then I can only conclude that the older imported templates are the cause.

To run tests you can create a short Mpeg2, say 10 minutes, that should speed up your tests.

I too have had success in the past importing videos from my sony DV camera and then used CVS X7 Ult / Pro to create video files burned to a hard drive and then put on a CD. I was able to add chapters with motion menus on each of the discs. I have even occasionally added videos (*.mp4) from my newer cell phones. I never once received any errors.

This past weekend I took many videos off of my cell phone(s) going back to late 2012. I have cut the videos into (3) separate files. All the videos have the *.mp4 format. My video files range from 2 hours flat to around 2 hours and 10 or so minutes in total length. As soon as I try to burn the file to my hard drive I immediately get the 'Convert step got some problems' 257.0

I am using the generic out of the box motion menus from CVS X7. as stated in previous threads i have tried to un click the motion menu box and still get the same error. i have tried to render an MPEg-2 video first and each time the file gets hung up at 40% and freezes.

I just installed the service pack (VSProX7_SP1) and hot fix (replacing the ulmp4lib.dll )

Hi Chris

And welcome to the forums.

You have first to convert / render your project to a video file.
As you are intending to burn a DVD then you should choose mpeg2 options.

As your original video clips are probably using progressive I would use the same frame order, the program uses Frame Based
I would also set my Project properties to use the same settings.
MPEG-2 (720 x 576, 16:9, 25p, 8Mbps)

MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Frame-based
(DVD-PAL), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 384 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

The data rate of 8000kbps will allow for 70 minutes of video per disc.
How long is your project?
At 2 hours a data rate of 4000kbps ish would be needed, that being VHS quality?

If the error occurs at 40% then there is some problem at 40% on the timelines?

The hot fix replacing the ulmp4lib.dll fixed issues of actually importing and playing the files, if you can do that then the ulmp4lib.dll will be ok.
I guess I am saying replacing the file will not fix render issues.

I stopped using motion menus when I first got this error message that fixed this issue for me. I haven't looked back, so I dunno if motion menus work now or not.
