Color(legacy)
Hello,
I tried to color some old photo by using the color(legacy) feature. However, when the image is mostly white, the color(legacy) don't seem to apply well. As an example, try to apply blue to pic surface pic2 and the result is pic2a. Is there any way I can make the color or vivid or able to white area without losing the shadowing area ?
Thanks

I don't understand what you are trying to do.
If you don't paint with your brush on the shadowed area, it will not turn in blue.

Re: Color(legacy)
I believe (and stand to be corrected) that what the OP is trying to say is that painting ONLY paints the shadow areas, and what is needed is to paint both the white and shadow area blue with the white becoming a lighter blue than the shadow area. But the paint only sticks to the shadow area, not the white, which remains white rather than a lighter shade of blue than the shadow area.Jean-Luc wrote:I don't understand what you are trying to do.

Re: Color(legacy)
The OP may be pointing out a new bug that has started with X8 and followed through to X9.
Using the paintbrush tool, the Color (Legacy ) blend mode operates differently than in earlier ones and appears uneven.
I tested using X2, X4, X7 and then X8 and X9
Loaded a color image, selected a color - blue from the Materials palette.
Chose the Paintbrush tool and placed a spot of color top right with Normal blend mode. (made sure was working properly)
Changed blend mode to Color (Legacy) and drew over light and dark areas of the image.
I leave it to other readers to test and see for themselves.
It is not something that would use every day but everything little that goes wrong with my favorite graphics program helps erode my confidence in it.

Re: Color(legacy)
Thanks JoeB, that's what I meant. I would like in this case to put light blue on the white area and a darker blue in the shade area. Let me give you another example, in this case I try to color the clothes of 2 person, one with pattern , the other is in a white dress. The dress on the right turn out very pretty but the left white dress I can neither enhance the white or any other colors at all, in this case I attempt to paint blue. So I ended up with part of photo looks gorgeous and the other (white dress) looks awful. It would be nice if I can applied color to those white or black area.
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Color(legacy)
I never use the color legacy feature for colorizing black and white photos.
I use two tools :
- Change to target tool with Color blend mode and varying Opacity
- Paint Brush tool with Normal blend mode and varying Opacity

Re: Color(legacy)
My color choices are terrible, but I went in a different direction than Jean-Luc. I created separate layers for each color, and used various blend modes and opacity settings to get what I wanted. This let me control each color fairly well (bad choices as they were) and let me work non-destructively. I may have also over done it on the dress.
But who cares, this is just an example of the process, I also wasn't careful with blobbiness of the brush. xD

Brush, or selections with fill tools. Whatever gets the color onto the layer. Yes

Re: Color(legacy)
Using selection is a good idea. It permits to colorize with the Fill tool like you say.
I tested with the Color changer tool and the layer in screen Mode to lighten the selection:

Re: Color(legacy)
While there are lots of different color codes for different silver looks, you specifically asked for shining silver. There is no such code available. Here's a quote from Wikipedia which explains why this is the case:
"The visual sensation usually associated with the metal silver is its metallic shine. This cannot be reproduced by a simple solid color, because the shiny effect is due to the material's brightness varying with the surface angle to the light source. In addition, there is no mechanism for showing metallic or fluorescent colors on a computer without resorting to rendering software which simulates the action of light on a shiny surface."
In other words, while you can start with a silver type color, to make it look "shiny" you'll have to manipulate the looks of shadows and highlights using PSP tools and/or various plugins that are available to achieve the "shiny" effect.

Re: Color(legacy)
Try this.
1. New document say 500 x 500 and fill with black
2. Text tool, fill color choose a shade of grey .
3. Type in word Silver, click the Apply tick and move it to centre it.
4. Double click the vector layer to get the Layers Properties dialog box, and select the Layer Styles tab.
5. Click the Bevel and change Size 45 and Opacity 85. This should make it look a dull silver.
alternately
4. Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel Click OK to accept change to raster layer.
5. Now play around with the settings there to get what you like.
As mentioned the appearance of a silver object occurs because of the way light appears to be reflecting off it and it having highlights on the surface. You can repeat this with different shades of light to medium grey to get different silver appearances.
