Problem with Videostudi X9

Post by jackmoopoo »

Don't know if this is in the right area but anyway, for some reason no matter what video or picture I put in, it's tiny and barely fills the black window and even in the overlay I can't make it any bigger than just being tall, it stays very skinny.

Hi

You do not give much details regarding your clips.

Usually video is recorded to a “ landscape” aspect, this is rectangular, with the width being longer than the height.
A Hd video would use an aspect of 16 : 9, known as widescreen.
16 being horizontal with a height of 9

If you turn the camera through 90degrees a Portrait aspect will be recorded, having the height greater than the width is clearly wrong, especially where video is concerned. That seems to be what you are describing.

Some Phone users record video with the phone vertical, this produces the portrait aspect, difficult to edit, leaving large areas of black left and right.

So can you give more details regarding your Video and Image files.
Right click a clip on the timeline and choose properties, what are they?

I wouldn't call it wrong, just different; most of the videos being captured today are like this from smartphones. Editing programs have to provide suitable filters and tools to handle these videos.

I would say that most/all displays, TV's and monitors, have a problem with these portrait videos. Newscasts use techniques to fill in the sides of these videos when showing them on TV. For sure mixing these videos with conventional landscape 16:9 videos is a challenge to make them suitable. The ideal is to make all video clips portrait or landscape. If portrait, then one has to figure out what to do with the default black stripes on the sides. If possible, crop the portrait video clips to landscape ratio so the project is landscape 16:9

The videos I recorded on the device was the same one I used before and they worked fine but now the video only fits somewhere around 40% to 50% of the black screen http://prntscr.com/f74nno (Example)
And this is what I get on the properties: http://prntscr.com/f74o70

From what screen was the image taken? A VS 9 window, from a VideoPlayer program? You have not given much information. Please explain exactly what you are doing.
How did you get the video from your smart phone to the computer?
What are your screen resolution settings?

OK, I think your videos are not portrait as we had thought. Properties from link shows 1920x1024 and this resolution is not the usual 1920x1080. What are the Properties of your Project? I have a feeling you are inserting a 1920x1024 video clip into the timeline which is expecting a different resolution.

It might be useful to others who have a similar problem if you could explain a little about how you fixed it...
