transition will not extend
HI.....I am VERY new to any form of editing. I got tired of paying someone to do it and figured I'd try it myself. Maybe a HUGE mistake! My latest quandary is why some transitions are easy to insert and extend and others are not. After I cut (with scissors) a section of video and then go to add a transition sometimes it "takes" and other times it does not. And if it does, at times, it will not allow me to extend the time in the "options" drop down. Got to be me...help!! Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Re: transition will not extend
Hi
And welcome to the forums
Transitions are applied to a clip or clips, the duration of the transition cannot be greater than the duration of the clip.
How long are your video clips?

Re: transition will not extend
I expect you will find that it is in fact 24 frames -- and if you are in a PAL country, that is virtually 1 second. The video clock used in VS is 0:0:0:24 -- which corresponds to Hours:Minutes:Seconds:Frames.

Re: transition will not extend
Hi new2vids
When you apply a transition between two clips, the timeline shortens by the duration (length) of the transition. This is because the clips overlap (or are made to overlap automatically) to accommodate the transition.
This may have some bearing on transitions "taking" or not, depending on what, if anything, is in the overlay tracks.
Also, there are a number of transitions that can be applied to clips on the overlay tracks.

Re: transition will not extend
Transitions will not "take" if you have Ripple editing enabled because as said clips need to move when you apply a transition but cannot do so if ripple editing is on

Re: transition will not extend
Thanks much.....this clears some things up......but why would it also occur at the end? Even the fade to black would not "take" in a recent attempt. I have no idea what "ripple" is....well there was a wine called ripple at one time. This of course is not to say that I did not mistakenly hit the "ripple" button! Transitions that work on overlay tracks....I even kinda know what that means! Do the transitions identify themselves as working in the overlay track.....or...how would I know which ones? Again....the suggestions and help are much appreciated!!!

Overlay Transitions are identified as such in the Transitions drop-down list.new2vids wrote:Thanks much.....this clears some things up......but why would it also occur at the end? Can you explain exactlwy what you are doing at "the end"? What do you have there, what transition, etc? How long in time is the last "item"?

Page 81 of the X10 Manual explains Ripple Edit.Well worth a read, as is the rest of the manual - it explains much of the nomenclature used.
If putting a transition on the last clip at the end of a Timeline, I suggest laying down (inserting) a Black graphic at the very end then adding the transition between the last clip and the end Graphic.

Re: transition will not extend
Ripple editing (the padlock symbols at the left of the timelines) lock the positions of the clips relative to each other. For example if you put a cut away on the overlay track under a particular clip on the top timeline but then alter another part of the main track, the overlay clip will move with the top line and will remain located under its designated clip so you do not have to re-align the clips later. The same will apply to a voiceover or a music clip. With "Ripple" all will remain lined up.new2vids wrote:Thanks much.....this clears some things up......but why would it also occur at the end? The best help you can get is to look at the many tutorials and try to understand how VideoStudio is designed to work. It is a very powerful programme but you need to know how to work round any problem you may come across. Most can be solved with a little thought PLUS if in doubt try it out, you can't bust anything.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.
