Installation Problem

Post by MikeMikeMikeMike »

I just downloaded the VS9 trial from the Ulead website. I went through the long install procedure. When I invoke the program, i get the opening try/buy screen and I click "try". Then I get a blue screen giving me three options so I selected the third one -- Editor. The screen plays with blue lights for a while then I get the "I'm sorry, this program got sick and had to go to bed." message, offering to send a dump to MS. :!:

I have plenty of space on my programs drive (Drive E: , but that should not matter.) I rebooted the computer and made sure I had a minimum of things running. The problem is 100% repeatable. IOW, I have not been able to get this puppy to give me a chance to even see its capabilities.

Any help for me? Download the entire 173MB again and start over? Click my heels three times and wish I was in Kansas? Give up? :(

Please let me know if there is any hope that I might be able to see what this program has to offer.

Oh: I'm running Windows XP on a Gateway (about 1.7GHz or so, IIRC). I have about 2.27GB free on the programs drive. My system is otherwise stable (well, as stable as any system is running MS software!)

Thanks for any useful input.

Cheers,
Mike

How much RAM do you have, and how much of that is available? Is your Windows XP fully patched? Do you have the latest DirectX 9.0c and up-to-date video drivers for your card installed?

Install Problem

Thank you for responding. I went back to the system requirements to check what I need, according to the manufacturer and it looks like this:

Intel® Pentium® III 800 MHz or higher [Yes]
Microsoft® Windows® 98 SE, 2000, Me, XP [Yes]
256 MB of RAM (512 MB or more recommended) [Yes]
1.2 GB of available hard drive space for program installation [Yes]
4 GB+ hard drive space for video capture and editing [?]
Windows®-compatible display with at least 1024x768 resolution [Yes]
Windows®-compatible sound card [Yes]

My configuration, as shown by software instrumentation is:

Processor: Pentium, 1 CPU 1700MHz
L2 Cache: 256KB
Memory: 255MB (68% used)
Video Card: S3 ViRGE/VX
Driver: Microsoft 5.1024.329.002
Mode: 1024x768 w/ 24bit color depth
DirectX 9.0 4.09.00.0904 (This last is confusing. I'm getting contradictory information from the hardware driver signing and Norton SI. I went to the MS site and downloaded the latest -- just in case.)

At the moment, I don't have 4GB available for editing on that drive (but I could with a bit of reshuffle) though I don't think that is the problem -- the program crashes before it is complete, and it crashes with an error that triggers the dump prep program. Surely any decent software product would tell me I lacked disk space. In fact, IIRC, this one DID just that when I intalled it. It reminded me that I needed more space on my programs drive.

As to your specific questions:

How much RAM do you have, and how much of that is available?

256MB as required. The instrumentation shows 68% available but, as I'm sure you know, Windows XP is a paged OS and so manages it's memory requirements. IOW, I have no IDEA what the available memory is because it changes by the second.

Is your Windows XP fully patched?

Yes. Did you have any specific patches in mind that I should have?

Do you have the latest DirectX 9.0c

Yes. Though I noticed that there was no mention of DirectX in the system requirements.

and up-to-date video drivers for your card installed?

Which drivers do you have in mind? Are you just saying that it's a "good thing" to have the latest drivers, or do you have something specific in mind that might be causing the problem. My video card has worked without problem, and continues to do so. I'm sure if there was a specific driver I need, it would be mentioned in the system requirements, no? So far as the latest ... I'm sure I have the latest driver as I don't belive there has been a new driver for this card in several years.

Well, I'm scratching my head over this one. VS9 is the only software giving me problems now. I sure wish I had a clue what was wrong. I guess I'll hit the newsgroups and see if there are known problems with Ulead. I had heard good things about it and really would like to see if it is something I need, but if all it does is crash, after using up all of that real estate, then I guess I'll have to look elsewhere.

I do really appreciate your help. If you have any other thoughts, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks again,
Mike

Have a go at downloading again, nothing to loose.
