Printing labels onto printable disks
The VS disk burn module has a label creation/printing option (the printer icon at the bottom of the add media page). When selected, it gives a function box enabling selection of various items for the label. See this image
This works a treat for those using paper labels. But many printers now provide a direct print onto suitable disks, and blank printable disks are also now commonly available. In the image, selection of the type of disk and the layout of the paper label is available as drop-down selection boxes with graphic icons showing how the print image fits on the paper sheet. But:
- can VS setup to and manage a label print output to a printable disk if the printer is capable of it?
- if so, how?

Re: Printing labels onto printable disks
Hi David
That is not possible using Video Studio.
My last printer was capable of printing direct to discs, the printer came with the appropriate software to create the disc layout, allowed adding images and text.
Some Epson printers are capable of doing that.
The printer needs a separate plastic holder to take the discs into the printer.
Worked very well, unfortunately the printer stopped working and replaced with another without this feature, a bit remiss of me there.

You're not the only one Trevor. I done the same, now have a bunch of blank printable discs.lata wrote:Worked very well, unfortunately the printer stopped working and replaced with another without this feature, a bit remiss of me there.

Re: Printing labels onto printable disks
Ah. Well maybe that's something Corel could think of for X11.
As to having printable disks, that's about all I've been able to buy lately, but printing labels and putting them on those disks works fine. In my EPSON NX130, Avery labels L7676 or J8676 work fine. Some claimed alternatives aren't - paper too thick, jams printer. But a few of my class students have printers capable of printing to disk and the current class project (to teach them how to do labels amongst the burn a DVD action) involves creating a usable label.

Re: Printing labels onto printable disks
I did DVD's and printing labels on disk and on sticky paper about three or four years ago. I don't mean to offend, but I would not teach anyone today about doing this. Distribution of video stories has moved beyond doing this; why teach something that is incredibly frustrating and is going away. I recall using several trials before I was nearly satisfied with the result. By the time I finished, I probably spent as much on ink, labels, and DVD's that a flash drive would have been cheaper and not frustrating at all.

Re: Printing labels onto printable disks
Hi Al,
Yep, technology has moved on and there are many ways of distributing movies these days. But the membership of my class is older/retired, not one under 60, and despite my suggestions, many of them (the young as it happens - the eldest is really into using dropbox for his rellies in NZ and the UK) prefer to use the DVD medium on most occasions. Plus - in a class sense - it's a very visible form of completion certificate. And VS has the facility, it works really well, and at the end you really don't have to burn a disk - sending an iso file by dropbox is just as effective as sending an mpg file. So I teach it for the skills it requires more than any burning desire to perpetuate the era of the plastic disk. If a student wants to send a Disk of movies to a distant relative, and wants to know how I'm not going to say no . .
I do note however that technological expectations have been turned on their head here. With the advent of Bluray, I think everyone expected that DVD's would die out quickly in favour of BR. That is what happened to tapes, Cd's and VCD. But not so. Instead, it was the BR solution that has died out, except as it pertains to retail home movies etc on disk that require good resolution for display on large home studio screens. The dirt cheap cost of DVD blanks and burners/players, excessive cost of BR burners/players and disks, fast internet and cloud storage have all contributed to that.

BTW David, I'm 73 years old, so age should have nothing to do with it.

Re: Printing labels onto printable disks
I moved from DVD a couple of years ago when I found my BR player also took SD cards and USB sticks. I now download onto a SD card for the player and a USB stick for my projector. Its so much simpler. I only use my stack of DVDs for occasional data storage.

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Re: Printing labels onto printable disks
As a 77 year old Ive been using VS since version 6.5 which came with my first analouge camcorder and have to date used the DVD format. My wife and most of my family and friends are not technical but all conversent with the use of DVD's and the use of the menu system used. As far as I remember the VS authoring program has only been updated twice. Once when Text menues were introduced and then for the introduction of HD video. I love VS and the one thing I wish Corel would update is the authouring part of VS. The next best thing to VS is this userboard and the people that support it. The first thing that I look at each day!!
