I think widest range format is mp4 (MPEG4 h264)

Thank u. Much more helpful than 'go ask netflix'.aljimenez wrote:I think widest range format is mp4 (MPEG4 h264)
I had observed everything I deal with seems to be h264 mp4s I would have thought there was a standard for 4k, high def & lo def files. Unfortunately, there are so many options in the 'share' menu in vsx10, each with very poor descriptions, it's impossible to tell.
Now what about AVC vs HEV etc. Any standards?

Hi
Your first choice of format should be the original properties of your video file.
Then if you require another format for YouTube then probably Mpeg4, again using similar properties to your original, I say that thinking of Progressive or Interlaced video.
For 4K again use the original properties.
Share – Same as first Clip or Project Properties where suitable is a good option.
My camera records to MTS files, those being Bluray compliant, for TV playback I keep the original settings, although Video Studio changes the extension from MTS to m2ts, but not a problem.
Upscaling my MTS to 4K is a waste of time, “cannot make a silk purse out of a pigs ear” comes to mind. The only time I would use 4K would be if my camera recorded to 4K, I would then need a larger TV to benefit from the increased size and quality, and probably upgrade my pc to cope.

Re: Exporting finished vids
Thx 4 that.
Yes, I agree rendering upscale isn't a good idea. I'd always used the highest common denominator theory.
My prob is that there are multiple formats eg 4k, hd & photos in my vid. I have 4k computer & set everything up 4k as was videoing on gopro, but ended up using the other formats along the way.
I would assumed therefore that the 4k option is the best render (if I match project setting it picks 4k), however, I rendered some snippets as mpeg-4 AVC 4K 25p & put them together & chose to re-render 'same as project settings' & it chose an NTSC format!
Would really help to know what these formats all are & why on earth it doesn't just have an option to choose for the widest use possible.
Hence, AVC, XAVC,HEV, NTSC?

Hi
Your best option is to set the project properties to your most used format, I assume 4K. Those settings being your preferred output settings.
Starting a new project will use the last project properties, till you add your first video, that may ask you to match the properties, view the Details tab, do you want those settings, the choice is yours.
If you want to manage your render template then I would use Settings Movie Profile Manager to create your own profile, using the “Add” option will copy the properties of selected videos. So you can make a template the same as your 4K.
Then if you are working with other video you can easily render those to 4K.
Your comment regarding NTSC, as you are in the US all your video should be NTSC, that’s the TV standard, you seem to have a mix using some mpeg-4 AVC 4K 25p, that frame rate is Pal standards.
When we add a 25 fps clip to a 29.97 fps project then the program will add frames as the Pal video does not have enough to fill the 29.97 timeline.
Can you right click one of your original 4K clips, choose properties what are they?
Render options
1 / Same as first Clip, (no good if you use WMV as intro)
2 / Same as Project Settings
3 / Default templates from Share
4 / User defined templates Movie Profiles Manager or “+” symbol from Share.
If you mix video formats then it is up to you to choose what output you require?
What you choose depends on your audience.

Re: Exporting finished vids
Your first post said you have 4K and HD video clips in your project. If this is so, then don't render to 4K, you should render to HD (assume this is 1080p). If you are in the USA, then why are you capturing video at 25fps?
