Hello to all and hope your day is going well // I've had Corel for years - but apparently - I'm too stupid to figure out how to deal with FEATHERING. Here is what I have been trying to do;
-create an image - vector - and then fill it with a color - it makes it a raster image...
-then drag or copy in images or items - which I want to resize and then feather onto that background, resize - OK - then to try to feather - NO - - 'selections - modify' is not availbale - they are also turned into raster images / layers / if I right click and select 'switch to vector mode' - no good, also not available
-so I just can't see how to bring in/resize a cropped/copied/whatever image and then try to feather it
-apparently only VECTOR images can be feathered - so how do I do this - - I can't even think straight this has me so frustrated
please

Inside PSP, vectors can't be feathered, only raster selections. Vectors are basic shapes with paths and nodes. They can have color, strokes, gradients, even textures and patterns if you set it up right. But they cannot be feathered. They have an anti-aliased option which smooths out the rough edges when PSP draws them. But that's about it. in order to feather the shape away you need to use masks or convert the vector into a raster layer and use selections. Technically you can use gradients but I've always found they have a definite cut off point and never truly look feathered.
What you want is to select your shape first, then modify that selection.
Kind of important, if you do "Paste as Selection" or "Paste as transparent Selection" and you resize the image the selected pixels will be promoted to their own layer and the selection will be removed. So the reason you can't use "Selections -> Modify" is because you don't have a selection. You need to select the object first using any of the available selection tools. Then you can modify the selection. Now, when the selection is feathered all that means is that the selection is feathered, it doesn't actually change any of the pixels on the layer. After feathering the selection you still need to perform some sort of action, like deleting the selected pixels, or using the eraser tool, or applying a mask.
Really quick, if you want to blend the edges, then once you've got your feathered selection you'll want to invert the selection so that it's only selecting the edges of the layer and not the full object itself.

Re: HELP - feather ? - driving me mad
Thanks for that - appreciate the help
...I was able to screw around inside of the vector and end up with a 'promoted selection' that would feather -
...OK - - here's what I did;
-created new raster image -1, filled to background color,
-opened a different raster image -2 - dragged picture into it -
-used the section tool to highlight/select just inside the edges, then
-copied that selection to the original image -1
selected - selections - modify - inside feather
...and that seems to work...
...have to keep playing with it - seems like it should be simpler, I had an old program years ago - micrographics - was very easy to do the feather,

Re: HELP - feather ? - driving me mad
Here's something you might try.
1) Create your new image, setting the background color inside the "New Image" dialog. It'll be pre-filled with the color you want.
2) Open another image
3) Copy
4) Paste as new layer in first image
5) Grab magic wand tool
6) Set match mode to Opacity and set the size of the feather you want
7) Click in a transparent area
8 ) Hit the delete key
