TIFFs won't open in X7.4.0.11 ?
My search found a lot of topics on TIFFs but none like this.
I use Sony SR2 and ARW raw files. I open these in PhotoDirector and save them as TIFFs (PNGs too limiting).
But then my Paint Shop Pro 7 thinks that they are RAW files.
But I can open them in Photoshop CS5 and then I save them directly as the TIFFs (PS too much hassle for post processing at my level).
Then I can open these saved TIFFs in PSP7.
Can PSP be configured to know that TIFFs are never RAW, or is there another solution?

April 5 - Apparently not, and to think that I have used Paint Shop Pro since JASC days!

If we knew what values in the file made it read as a RAW image we could so something about it. Does PhotoDirector have options for TIFF files that you can play around with and see if it offers better results with PSP?

FWIW I use Photoline as my go to editor. I often send a tiff over to PSPx8 via Photoline's external editor feature. Sometimes, not always, PSP will think that a tiff is a raw file and give me a junk image. Also if the tiff from Photoline has any transparent sections PSPx will corrupt those sections.
My only conclusion is that Corel/Jasc/PSP is doing some 'strange' with tiff files. Not all tiffs are the same!

Hey Bodley, can you produce three or four TIFF files for examples we can send to Corel to test with? With full camera information and save values from PhotoDirector? Maybe also include versions from Photoshop that don't give this error for comparison?

These TIFF files are HUGE - 60+ MB from my 3888 x 2592 camera.LeviFiction wrote:Hey Bodley, can you produce three or four TIFF files for examples we can send to Corel to test with? I have done a lot of research into the TIFF minefield and I think the problem is with my PhotoDirector 7. For a start it has no TIFF compression options (though these are of little advantage with 16bit colour). By many accounts the alternative DNG option is limited.
For now I will convert my RAW files to TIFF in Camera Raw (I wish it was stand-alone - it would save so much time) until I find something more convenient*. I will continue with my PSP 17 because I am used to working with 2 monitors and PSP supports these, unlike Adobe. Being able to work on selections from photos full-screen on my second monitor is marvelous.
*Suggestions?

You could always resize your images to say 300 x 200 and save them as smaller tiffs, test them to see if you have the same problem and if so upload those for other sto test.

Size doesn't matter.
Well it shouldn't. I often work with 200+meg tiffs.

Re: TIFFs won't open in X7.4.0.11 ?
The reason I mentioned resizing them was not to solve the problem , but in response to Levifictions post asking for 3 or 4 tiffs to send to Corel to which pjbw responded that they were too large. Thus the suggestion to make them smaller, test them to see if they still have the same problem and then post them so that Levifiction and Corel could examine them.brucet wrote:Size doesn't matter.Well it shouldn't. However as the original poster has mentioned it may be Photo Director that is saving them in a way that disguises them as a raw file for PSP purposes.

Re: TIFFs won't open in X7.4.0.11 ?
Technically it's both PhotoDirector and PSP. The fact that they can open the TIFF file in other programs just fine, like Photoshop, suggests that PSP has some sort of trigger that's being flipped. Probably by lazy code that just assumes "this should only be here if it's a RAW file." And even if PhotoDirector's settings are to blame in this instance, people have had similar issues with TIFF files before. This isn't new, and not only PhotoDirector does it. PSP still has the ability to improve how they open TIFF files, at the very least allow the option to "Assume regular TIFF" instead of forcing RAW conversion.

Guys I think I have mentioned it before. But I use Pholotline as my go to editor. However I still like some features of PSP. Photoline can send a file to an external editor such as PSP and back again once changed. I have often had Photoline send a tiff to PSP. PSP confuses that tiff as, what appears to be, a raw file. I'm not sure it is a raw file or just a corrupt tiff file. It's not a repeatable error. Just something that happens from time to time.
I suspect that PSP it tripping over some tiff formats.

[I have often had Photoline send a tiff to PSP.]
I had never heard of PhotoLine so I had to trial it in my Windows 7 32bit.
Quite soon I thought that the learning curve would be too steep for me. I went to File, Open to open a Sony SR2 file. However none of the SR2s in the folder were listed, only the attached JPEGs. A lot of reading of the Help and no further on. Then by chance I moused over the icons and saw Open. Clicked on this and Bingo, the SR2s were listed. Lots of TIFF options and the 'Unpacked' one' opened in PSP 17.
A worry that the above sort of silly bug may be repeated so I will make sure I keep my files secure while trialling PhotoLine.

pjbw here's the link to Photolines forum. http://www.pl32.com/forum3/viewforum.ph ... de3c5fd026 It may help if you have Photoline questions.
Photoline is an excellent editor. But so is PSP. Each has their good and bad points. Is seems, however, that Photoline is more forgiving when handling various types of files.

Re: TIFFs won't open in X7.4.0.11 ?
Sorry Brucet but I had to uninstall Photoline.
After I had successfully opened the TIFF it had created I went back into Photoline and did File, Open by habit I suppose. There were the SR2s listed which were not listed before.
I will stick to my complicated routine using Camera Raw.
I handle all my photos in Breezebrowser which uses the standard Windows file system. BB has options to send a selected file to one of two applications. For my SR2s (and ARWs, both Sony) I opt for my Photoshop CS5. When PS gets these it automatically opens them in Camera Raw and you can't do better than that! Here I do any preliminary 'improvements' to the photos and then Save them As TIFFs for further processing via BB in PSP.
(How Photoshop CS5? Way back JASC's PSP 9 had a nasty bug which was still there in Corel. So I bought PS CS2. This was the worst bit of Windows software that I had ever used! Luckily I did not uninstall it because I think Adobe realised how bad CS2 was and made it very worth my while upgrading to CS5. In the meantime I had bought two Lexar 4MB Compact Flash memory cards and each one came with a mini CD with PSP 9.02. These had the 9's bug fixed and it has been PSP ever since, with only the occasional hiccup (TIFFs!) and that awful 18 which only displayed the bottom half of my pictures. Luckily over the years I have learned to backup previous versions of software before upgrading and so I was able to recover my PSP 17.)
