We don't think the video source is h265, so some of the earlier comments were wrong. The video file should have no issues being inserted into VS and thus we think this is a bug in the current VS. It would help Corel if you shared a smaller video clip like around 10 to 20 seconds.

Aha! Thanks -- a very useful tip. I confess I have long wondered what 'Default' actually meant in terms of Properties.

As for the Sony camera, yes indeed it does not film in HEVC/h.265 format. It is all h.264 -- and as Al has already said, that should go into Video Studio without problems.

Here are the video specifications of the camera from the Sony website:
RECORDING FORMAT (VIDEO)
XAVC S format:MPEG4-AVC/H.264, AVCHD format ver.2.0 compatible:MPEG4-AVC/H.264, MP4: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264

VIDEO RESOLUTION

VIDEO RECORDING RATE (ABR / VBR)
XAVC S 4K: approx.100Mbps9, XAVC S 4K: approx.60Mbps9, XAVC S HD: approx.50Mbps9, AVCHD PS:approx.28Mbps/FX:approx.24Mbps/FH:approx.17Mbps/HQ:approx.9Mbps/LP:approx.5Mbps910, MP4: approx.3Mbps9

so far support told me that the corel cannot support my format. I don't understand why they list my format in the specs as being able to. this is so frustrating! I don't realy know what else to do than to use a software package I downloaded that can handle it. corel needs to get their stuff together.

I'm sorry for that official answer. I have a workaround for you if you want to be able to get your video into X10. Get Format Factory (google it, install with careful observance of the stuff it tries to install). Format Factory converts your file to .mp4 using default settings. The converted file will load into X10 just fine. If this is satisfactory, you can try changing the settings in Format Factory to get higher quality conversions.

I have been experiencing the same issue, i.e. VS crashes with 4K mp4 files from Sony ax33 and ax53, since VS X9 time and it is a big disappointment. It seems to me that the crash usually occurs when you have a longer clip (>3 minute?) from my Sony camcorders. My workaround is to pre-process the clips with another video editor before importing to VS. Corel really needs to root cause the bug and fix it.

Hi

Have you informed Corel Support regarding your problems in editing your 4K video files?

Are you able to upload a sample (>3 min) to a sharing site, Google Drive, One Drive, DropBox etc. provide a sharing link on your post and we can try to replicate your crashes.

Can you explain this? I'm working with the trial of VS2018 and I'm having a hell of a time with mp4's crashing.
aljimenez wrote: Is your X10 the Trial version? If so, this could be the problem since the trial version is crippled on mp4 files.

Re: videostudio 2018 trial crashes

Hi Dougm1966

I ran the 2018 trial a few months ago with no problems, yes it has its limitations with some features but that is to be expected when using trial versions.
Corel seem to have worked on the 2018 trial which does appear ok compared to how earlier trials preformed.
I had no problems in using Mpeg4 type video
Can you give more details of your video files, right click a clip on the timeline and choose properties, what are they?
Typically video from mobile phones may give problems especially when using a variable frame rate.
