Art media brushes not working properly
I recently upgraded to PSP X9 and, so far, I've been pleased with the upgrade. But when I try to use such art brushes as chalk, marker, crayon, etc., the paint comes out in a small dot grid pattern! (The oil brush works fine, but the other art brushes have the dot grid pattern.) (I still have X6 on my computer; and all those brushes work just fine in X6.) Do you have any idea how to correct this?

Re: Art media brushes not working properly
Just an idea: have you checked the Materials palette (F6), perhaps you have a (background) pattern or texture instead of solid colour?
If you don't have "All tools" on the palette checked, it can be different for each tool.

Re: Art media brushes not working properly
The art media brushes don't have a texture setting. They are always solid colors. The texture is part of the art media layer. What you're seeing is the texture of the canvas. If you open the layer properties you'll see a "Canvas Texture" tab. Change this to something a bit denser. The Oil brush looks fine because it's a thick paint that gets into all of the texture grooves.

Re: Art media brushes not working properly
For some mysterious reason, the brushes I mentioned started working properly. The only thing I did was test them out on a new file,
art media layer, rather than using them on a image in which the art media layer gets put on automatically. I can't see how this would
enable them to work properly. But they are working fine now, even over an existing image. Go figure! Thanks so much, though, for the
advice re: the canvases. I've been using PSP for many years and didn't realize there was a canvas setting for the art media brushes.

Re: Art media brushes not working properly
Same problem over here. I installed the PSP 2018 ultimate upgrade over PSP X6. All works fine except that some brushes and the airbrush show the grid pattern when working on a downloaded tiff file.
Luckily I found your post with your workaround. I created a new file, choose the airbrush, clicked on a color from the materials pallet and started painting. Now the pattern has disappeared.
Must be some glitch in the upgrade process.
Thanks cookie1234!
