Change audio speed without change in pitch?

Post by Djard007 »

Freeware Audacity lets you easily speed up or slow down audio without altering the pitch. Is there a way in VS to do the same: i.e. speed up a segment of a video clip without changing the pitch of the audio?

No, VS is video oriented.

As the audio is digital there is little change in the pitch provided the changes in speed are reasonable. You may want to separate the audio from the video clip using "split audio" and work on it separately. You can easily change the length of any clip by holding "Shift", clicking on the end of the clip and pushing or pulling it to the length you require. By splitting audio you can test the result independently from the video.

Thank you. Maybe a future edition with incorporate the feature I describe and make VS even better.

I thought I had made it clear that VS already does that. It always helps to learn how to use the program before criticising.

I'm not being facetious but sincerely ask someone to point out where I have been "critical" in this post. I don't wish to offend anyone, especially the good folks who are willing to lend a hand.

Before posting, I did try speeding up a variety of video clips; but in each instance, despite "successful" rendering, the audio fails to play back, no matter what media player I use. (MediaInfo identifies the clips to contain audio tracks.) I also consulted the "Help Topics" but found nothing to help me perform the task I described. Initially I was confused with VS's use of the term "Split" to mean both cutting a stream into two parts as well as to mean demultiplexing two streams. I'm OK with VS not using conventional video editing terminology (like multiplex, concatenate, merge, etc.), but I'm just unable to retain audio after altering video speed.

I'll try to (1) separate the audio track from the video stream, (2) speed up a particular section of a video, (3) speed up the corresponding audio section, (3) apply the "Pitch Shift" audio filter to the audio segment to restore the original pitch, and then (4) multiplex the audio and video before saving the file. Would these steps be what I need to do, or am I going about this incorrectly? Thanks for your patience.

Telling me VS "does that" without sharing how to do it is not helpful to me.

I'll try searching for the steps on YouTube and also experiment. If I figure out a way to use the Variable Speed tool without messing up the audio, I'll be happy to share it with others.

Hi Djard007

Just wondering why you need to stretch the Audio or Video clip

We can right click any/most video clips and choose Split Audio, that will mute the video clip and place an audio clip on the voice track
We could apply Speed Time-lapse to each of these clips, doing so will of course cause the Video Audio sync to suffer, slowing or speeding up playback.

If the video is suffering from audio sync issues then applying Speed Time-lapse may correct that, even so may be difficult to correct any Out of Sync issues.

Switching the timeline to view via sound Mixer will show the Audio Wave form and may help to re-positioning the clips?

I record a musician that challenges me to be creative with video. For example, he wanted to play a difficult section of an instrumental slowly then speed the section of video back up to normal (zoom in of the hands). In this manner the section will sound "clean." I have no problem with the video part, and I can synchronize audio and video, even correct audio drift, using Audacity. But people at this forum say that it is possible with VS to alter video speed without altering pitch. So I have been requesting help to perform the task. To date, all I have learned is that if I alter video speed, the audio no longer plays back. I reiterate that the "what" is useless information without the "how."

I'm wondering if modifying video speed without damaging the audio is actually possible, despite claims to the contrary. I wasted a lot of time looking through all the sections on speed in the X9 Help Topics and manual. If the task I describe is not possible, I'll use a workaround that is laborious. But if it is possible, hopefully someone will share how to do it. Have you been able to change the speed in a section of video without losing the audio?

Hi

I would have thought Variable Speed should allow us to retain the volume, then mute if that is our wish, not force the mute on us. I am sure Mute is applied automatically

I have just tried a on a section of video and first attempt applied Variable Speed, that applied mute.
I then tried Speed Timelapse at 40% which again applied Mute, however I was able to deselect mute (right click clip for options) and hear the volume playing slowly.

My third attempt to use Speed Timelapse worked ok without applying Mute

As you may imagine I am a little confused at the moment, but saying that was able to use Speed Timelapse and recover the audio.

Ok
I have rebooted my program just for a clean start.
Added a video to the top track
Used the scissors to cut the video to 20 seconds showing the close up of hands
Applied Speed timelapse at 40% to that clip

Clip plays ok in slow-mo with audio, no auto mute

I noticed your post in "wishlist section" with a comment regarding changing the pitch.
Here are some details using Audacity

Here are the steps I tried, aiming to correct audio after successfully modifying video speed. Maybe someone can point out what I am overlooking.

1. Import video into timeline -> zoom in.
2. Drag scrubber to where you want the slow motion to start -> Split clip (scissors icon under preview window).
3. Drag to where you wish to end the slo-mo effect -> Scissors.
4. Storyboard View. You will now see that the clip is in 3 parts.
5. Highlight the middle section -> Options (at middle far right) -> Speed/Time-lapse -> set speed to, say, 40%.
6. OK -> Play (to preview). The audio pitch will sound dramatically lowered.
7. Right-click on the middle section -> Audio Filter -> scroll down and select "Pitch Shift" -> Add -> Options.
8. Drag button up a few semitones -> click on Play to audit (fails!) -> adjust pitch up or down until audio sounds at original or desired
pitch.

For me, preview playback in Audio Filter "Options" fails, and even if I set pitch to +12 semitones, the effect is not applied after clicking OK.

Hi

What do you mean by Zoom in, are you referring to the timeline or adding zoom effect to the clip?

After adding the Pitch Shift, I drag the slider to -12
After pressing ok a small orange FX icon can be seen on the thumbnail. indicates that an effect has been applied
My clip plays ok slow with pitch shift

What do you mean by audio fails?

By "zoom in" l mean be able to see every frame in the timeline, which I find necessary to determine the precise in and out points.

By "audio fails," I refer to the audio filter. When I adjust the pitch of the section with "Pitch shift" and click on the preview play button in the Audio Filter panel, I get no playback to audit the amount of pitch shift.

I'm probably overlooking something.

Hi

As I said in my earlier reply

I can adjust the speed of the video, apply the pitch filter and the clip plays ok, in slow mo and hearing the audio.

I can read adjust the pitch and confirm that the pitch filter is working ok

I do not understand why your program does not do that.?

Have you tried re-installing the program.

But first try resetting the program

some info here.

Post Updated

I have created a Smart Package of a 10 second clip with Pitch / Speed applied
You can download from my one drive.
Although I suspect if Pitch is not working on your program you probably won’t hear on this project?

Thank you Trevor. Are those your hands? Nice Jazz style.

I got your clips to play OK. And with some help I managed to modify video speed without altering the audio pitch, using the Speed/Time-lapse feature. I understand that in X10, Time Remapping can be used to achieve the same result.

Perhaps no so noticeable when video is slowed, but when speeding up video, the audio quality is dramatically lowered, unacceptable in music. I found a workaround, but it is laborious. I'll share it once I type up the steps involved, wherein the audio quality is 99.9% preserved.

Cheers!
