Scodog,
As I wrote, I have no problems at all using my 720 ~28fps mjpeg in a 1080 25fps (or 30) project, not in clip mode nor in project mode. I'm using VS19.2
**I couldn't open your vsp in my system as it's X10

Re: VS X10 will play AVI file as a Clip but not as a Project
Old thread, but...
There's some big strangeness with VS and mjpeg.. I've been struggling with this for several years since X8 when I got my Brinno camera which shoots in mjpeg.
One day it works perfectly but suddenly it stops and I spend hours/days to get it working again. Uninstall X9, install x10, uninstall x10, install x9, etc.
Just today everything was fine after I upgraded to X10.5. Than it just stopped working. It would play/edit "clip" but would do nothing in "project" (hit PLAY and nothing plays). After that the "clip" mode stops working as well. Click here and there and the app crashes... But it worked just fine yesterday!
Another strange thing. I open an older project with MJPEG clip in it (edited with audio and titles added) - all works just fine! If I create a new project with the same clip, it misbehaving, stops playing and crashes...
Go figure...

Hi Max
Welcome to the forums.
First did you allow Video Studio 10 to auto update to X10.5 or downloaded the files from the corel web site, Just interested as there is a problem with installing the service pack.
I don’t know what to think about the freezing and crashing when using Mjpeg video.
Strange that you are having similar issues with X9 and x10, with maybe X10.5 confusing the issue?
Are you able to create a short test project using Mjpeg.
Smart Package and upload to a sharing site, Google, DropBox, One Drive etc.
Provide a share link and we can test your project.

Re: VS X10 will play AVI file as a Clip but not as a Project
I am glad I posted/read here - found the culprit.
If I use my regular VS project preset which is 1280x720 / 30p (29.97fps) MPEG-4 (and agree with VS to change the project settings on the clip insertion) then all is bad. My MJPEG's are 30fps. So changing 29.97 to 30 screws things up.
If I don't agree with VS and keep 29.97fps then everything is fine.
If I create/use a custom preset with 1280x720 / 30fps and MJPEG encoding then everything is fine.
Never paid much attention and really understood to project settings - thought output settings were more important. Now I understand.
Useful thread/info - thanks!

Re: VS X10 will play AVI file as a Clip but not as a Project
Hi Max
Thanks for the feedback on that problem, must keep that in mind
Setting project Properties to match our video properties displays the frame size correctly, and sets the timeline to the correct frame rate, which allows the program to display all frames.
Clearly there is an issue using 29.97 to 30fps.
I would allow the settings to be changed, then edit the projects frame rate, at least you get all correct.
If you use a program called MediaInfo, that should show the correct properties of your video file.
It does seem the program has got that wrong.
Are you able to upload a sample to a sharing site, Google, DropBox etc.
We can also test the files, just interested.

Re: VS X10 will play AVI file as a Clip but not as a Project
Hi,
Here's the link to a short clip shot with my Brinno TLC200 Pro.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8VWDS ... sp=sharing
Start a new project in VS with one of the standard presets e.g. Online / MPEG-4 (1280 x 720, 30p, 5Mbps). Which is, in fact, 29.97fps. Drop the file in the timeline. VS will ask if you want to change the project settings to match. If you say Yes it goes bad (changing 30 to 29.97). CLIP works. If you switch to PROJECT it doesn't do anything. When you switch back to CLIP it doesn't work anymore.
If you say No to change the project settings to match - all is well.
This feature was always there. I was really confused since sometimes it would work sometimes it wouldn't (depending on my answer to the question if I wanted to change the settings but back then I didn't realize it was the culprit).
Thanks!

Re: VS X10 will play AVI file as a Clip but not as a Project
Hi Max
Downloaded your clip and followed your instructions - my system locks up/hangs regardless of the answer I give to match or not to match the project properties with the clip properties.
To get the Online / MPEG-4 (1280 x 720, 30p, 5Mbps) choice I first had to change to NTSC, restart VS X10. I am usually set up for PAL.
MediaInfo shows your clip as 30fps, not 29.97.
"If I create/use a custom preset with 1280x720 / 30fps and MJPEG encoding then everything is fine." - agreed, all is fine on my setup too.

Re: VS X10 will play AVI file as a Clip but not as a Project
Hi Max
Thanks for the sample.
It appears to me to be an audio issue, or the lack of it.
The original Mjpeg video does not have an audio stream, setting properties to match I suppose should cope, however Video Studio does not seem to like that video without audio.
When we manually set the project properties to Mjpeg it is most likely we also add the audio.
So I doubt it has anything to do with 30 fps re 29.97fps

Hi Max
Presumably VS X10 uses the properties of your previous project if you decline the invitation to match the project properties with the first clip properties; this would explain why I found the hang symptoms regardless of whether I did or did not accept invitation.
To take up Trevor's hypothesus wrt no audio, do any of your MJPEG video clips have audio that exhibits the same symptoms? If so, can you make it available for testing?

Re: VS X10 will play AVI file as a Clip but not as a Project
Hi Max again,
Have just tried this and it seems to work OK (as expected)
1 Make VS X10 crash/hang by accepting the invitation to make the project settings the same as your clip (ie first clip), save this before playing clip/project etc to make it crash, just to make sure the project properties are set up for the next step.
2 Restart VS X10, pull a Color Block down to the top video track and import your clip to an overlay track, make Fit to Screen. Now play clip or project.
No crashes/hangs, just as should be.
Conclusion: VS X10 only trips up if the MJPEG clip is on the top track and you have accepted the invitation to match project properties with the clip.
GSpot shows your clip as having "Bad Data" - do all the clips recorded by your camera show the same symptoms - invoke the crash when "...same as clip properties" is chosen?

Just a quick thought. Have you by chance installed any CODEC packs on that computer that ay have overwritten the standard MJPEG CODEC?

Re: VS X10 will play AVI file as a Clip but not as a Project
Hi
These are my findings….
Using the Show Messages option will copy the files properties to match the project properties as:-
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 1280 x 720, 30 fps
Frame-based
MJPEG Compressor
No Audio
Video Studio does not like “no audio” set for Project Properties.
The program crashes for me when playing in project mode, clip playback does not crash the program.
Setting Project Properties using audio to the following settings will play ok without crashes.
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 1280 x 720, 30 fps
Frame-based
MJPEG Compressor
Interleave audio for every 15 frames
PCM, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo
I would suggest setting project properties to the output settings, that could be Mpeg4 for internet playback.

Hi Trevor
Change the extensions to VSP to open in either X10 or X9. You will obviuosly need to link to the original TLC004.avi file to play.
