Can't Open Paint Shop Pro

Post by Jhackman »

I posted about this previously but after not responding to the post for a few days the ticket got closed. (ref. 4071590 Can't open Paintshop Pro X9)

I still have not had any success opening the software and I actually recently went ahead and bought the ultimate pack assuming we would be able to resolve this issue afterwards. This purchase is for business purposes and we operate behind a proxy server. Not sure if that is causing issues or not. Also, my computer runs Windows 7 Enterprise but that was not an option on your list when I created my account profile for the forum. Any help to get this program up and running would be appreciated. I took a screen recording but your forum won't let me upload it.

Jhackman - this is a user web forum. No Corel employees actively visit these forums to support technical support issues. One or two might come and make suggestions, but no official support is given here. The best you can hope for is if some users on here have had similar issues.

I should also point out that the "ultimate' pack is just additional software. There is no difference in the version of PSP. So if you had already purchased X9 and you don't need the Ultimate software I would suggest seeing if you can return it.

Quick question, what do you mean "Can't open?" If you open up your Task Manager then start Corel does it start and then immediately close? Does it hang in the background? Does the splash screen show up and get stuck on a particular task? What exactly happens?

If you hold down SHIFT while opening PSP does this do anything? - this is technically supposed to reset PSP to factory defaults.

How did you install PSP? Do you install it on the default C drive or did you install it somewhere else? Do you have roaming profiles on your business network?

When I start PSP it opens to the gray interface but quickly displays an error saying, "Corel Paint Pro X9 has stopped working". See attached screen capture.

If you click on the "View Problem Details" what does it say? I don't expect it to say anything we would find useful but I'm curious.

Have you tried opening PSP while holding SHIFT as I suggested? <- might help if there is something corrupted that needs to be reset

Have you tried running PSP as Administrator? (actually right-click and select "Run as administrator") <- might help determine if there is a permissions issue that wasn't seen.

It has, on occassion, been suggested if there is a problem with the program or with installation of the program, to create a secondary administrator account, then use that account to install PSP. Have you tried that at all?

Neither makes a difference, however, the interesting thing I just noticed is that I can open the 32-bit version with no problems. It's just the 64-bit that is not working. But I am running a 64-bit OS sooo.... What does that mean?

No idea. Possibly that something was corrupted on install that can't be fixed with a factory reset. Or that the 64-bit version is doing something that the 32-bit version is not that reacts poorly with something unique to your system.

Easiest starting point is to re-download and reinstall again. if that still doesn't fix it, call corel again. I know they were useless the first time, but there's not much more I can suggest at this point. I am clueless.

I have re-downloaded and installed a few times with no change. I will submit a ticket with Corel and see if they can figure it out. Thanks for your help! If we figure out the solution I will post it here.

Thank you, LeviFiction. I was having difficulties installing PSP x8 on my system, wanted administrator priviledges which I already have, so I used your suggestion and held the shift key down during installation, and it has helped the installation get past that glitch. Corel asked me to uninstall the program after the autosave was corrupted. However, once uninstalled, I was unable to install again due to that glitch. Luckily, I found this thread and it has allowed me to get PSP x8 up and running again. Huge thanks for that.

Hello @Jhackman did you ever get an answer as to why the 64bit version is not working? I have the same issue. I installed the 32 and the 64 bis version on a Windows 7 64bit PC and when I start the 32bit version everything is fine. But when I try starting the 64bit version, the software just closes instantly after starting, without displaying any error at all. Just wondering if you had an answer. Thank you

He's unlikely to reply after this much time.

You can reset psp by holding down shift whilst opening it.

I haven't ever gotten the 64 bit version to work. I just use the 32 bit version for now since it seems to be working just fine.
