How can I add an EFFECT to the edges of a PNG?

Post by Grazie »

OK, I have a really nice PNG. It is TEXT and I want to add a GLOW around the TEXT. How do I do this?

Is the text on a transparent layer?

To set up your own
1. New document eg 500 x 500 pixels , tick transparent.
2. Text tool , choose background color, type in text and apply.
You can leave it as vector or right click and convert to raster layer.
3. Double click the layer with the text on it to get the Layer Properties dialog .
4. Select Outer Glow, choose your color , size and opacity of the glow and click OK

Thanks for your rapid reply hartpaul, but I already have text in a PNG file. I can add this PNG as a Layer and it nicely shows over the underlying Graphics. Now I want to do without generating the content of the TEXT PNG, is a GLOW around the TEXT within the PNG. How?

It would appear that a MIX of RASTER and VECTOR with a GLOW fx on a single Layer PNG is Flattening my Project File.

Is there a Setting that I can force PSP NOT to Flatten my Project file?

That is done using steps 3 and 4 mentioned above.

What I did to match what you are doing.

1. Loaded an image
2. New transparent document, typed in some text, then merged down so text was still on a transparent background. Saved that as a png file and deleted the document on the workspace.

3 loaded the png text, copied and pasted as new layer on the image from (1).

4. Double clicked that layer with text to get the Layer Properties dialog, selected Layer Styles and ticked Outer Glow and then chose color , opacity and size to suit. This gives glowing text on a background image.

Are you not getting this at all?
If not please explain step by step what you are doing and where things go wrong so we can attempt to duplicate your problem.

Thanks again. If you read my posts after that you will note I had added the GLOW in the way you directed.

OK, so in essence you are saying to me I should "prepare" the PNG with the GLOW and THEN introduce that as a Layer - yes? This is kinda where I got to in the last 24 hours too. However, I'll try again, one of the TESTs flattened my Layers again. But I'll "rinse and repeat".

Here's the Elephant in the room for Corel: If I can SEE what I want, surely that's what the PSPIMAGE save file should deliver back? At the very least, a WARNING should come up front and centre saying that the layer needs to be supported some other way. Dunno if that makes sense or not. I have done much BETA testing for Sonic Factory, SONY, GenArts, NewBlue and they like me 'cos they know when something is hurting.

Apologies for going of beam there, but this "flattening" is really bugging me. :?

I already have a transparent BG TEXT PNG. I don't need or want to go back and reinvent the PNG I already have.

You seem to be hung up on this png file. When you load a png , a jpg, a bmp, a tif file into psp (and probably most graphics programs) it is no longer a tif, png jpg etc. It is a bit mapped image file in the computer's memory. It only goes back to being a particular type of file when you save it as that file.

You also have another thread going on the same issue. It may be that your version of PSP X8 is corrupted in some way. You could try resetting to the default. Also as I mentioned in the other thread try experimenting to see what actions cause your flattening.

A bit harsh, however I do WANT to use the PNG.

This thread is about how do I do the GLOW thing and hearing that how somebody was successful - thank you hartpaul for that for confirming.

OK, your attentive and patient feedback had made me do the detective work and I believe I have finally QA-ed a working result. :)
