Clipped Highlights and best B+W conversion technique in X8

Post by psp user »

Hello, I have two questions, please:

1) For RAW (or even JPEG) images, does Paintshop Pro X8 have a feature that shows clipped highlights? Currently, the best (closest feature) I find is the histogram. Incidentally, Sony's converted showing clipped highlights and shadows, as I am referring to (screenshot attached).

2) What is the best way to convert a color image (RAW and/or JPEG) to black and white? I want to throw red, blue, or green filters (depending on the image) to the conversion to highlight different shades of grey. Is Effects>Photo Effects>Black and White menu better for this purpose or is Adjust>Color>Channel Mixer better,...or is there another "best" way?

Thank you!

2) There isn't really any "best" If you're not sure how to combine the red green and blue channels in the color mixer to highlight a specific color you'll definately appreciate the Black and white photo effect and its color wheel. But if you prefer a lot more fine-grained control then that command it's the best. I mean...it's not terrible but all you have are labels telling you how much RGB mixture there is as you drag the cursor around the wheel. Which is great for getting in the ballpark. And it's more visual on the colors you want to emphasize. Then there's the built in brightness and clarify effects if you want to make use of them that one-stop shop feel is nice.

As for #1 - I don't use the RAW. I know in the Levels command if you hold CTRL while dragging the sliders around it will show clipping. But I don't know if the RAW editor has something similar.
