Hmmm... I just tried that now. Normally I have all the hardware acceleration boxes ticked in Preferences on my main video editing computer, and this was the case in my failed efforts outlined above. But I just now left all 4 hardware acceleration boxes unticked, and the h.264 clip inserted and played just fine!
I went back to the acceleration boxes, and when I ticked the first one -- Editing Process: Enable Hardware Decoder Acceleration -- VS froze immediately and had to be closed by Task Manager.
On reopening VS, I left the first box unticked but ticked the other three. Again the video inserted and played without problem. So pretty obviously the problem is linked to the hardware acceleration in the Editing Process...
