Re: MP4 file crashes VSX
Hi Andre
I did not have a problem inserting the clip to X10 library or timeline
The clip does not contain any audio stream.
The video data rate is low at 628 kbps, that reflects in the poor playback, video is pixilated.
But no crashes

Re: MP4 file crashes VSX
Unlike lata, I found that there is obviously something about that clip that Video Studio does not like. Using X10, I could insert the clip into the Library window, but then VS just froze. There was no error message but I had to use Task Manager to close VS. The same happened when I reopened X10 and tried to insert the clip into the timeline. Nothing appeared in the timeline and again VS simply froze and had to be closed using Task Manager.
However, there was no trouble inserting, playing and editing the clip in Vegas Movie Studio 14, Cyberlink Power Director 15 and Adobe Premiere Elements 14.

Like Trevor, had no problem inserting clip into timeline and plays in clip and project mode. Could not get program to crash

Re: MP4 file crashes VSX
Very interesting to find out what our "differences" are. I have eactly the freeses like Ken experienced in X8,X9, and X10. To morrow I will try to test on other PCs. No idea what happens up to now.
FYI and a bit off topic. I found this bug when playing around with H264 vs h265 comparisons. See my test folder hereunder.

Ken, can you use the H265 clip in yr other NLE's?.

Re: MP4 file crashes VSX
I haven't yet tried the H265 clip in the other NLEs I mentioned above. But it inserts and plays just fine in VS X10...
But here's something interesting. You mentioned trying it out on other computers. So I just started up my "old" video editing computer, where I also have X10 loaded. And the H264 clip loaded and played without any problem!
That computer is also a Core i3 running Win 10 Pro. It won't play the H.265 clip since its graphics card is not of a level required for that codec.
I also just opened X8 on my main video computer and again the H264 video caused it to freeze, just as it did X10 on this same computer. I don't have X9 on my main computer at the moment, so can't test that, but imagine it too would freeze.
My main computer, I should add, has two graphics cards: the on-board Inel 4400 and an NVidia one. The above tests were done with the Intel card (which is the default). I just restarted X10 using the NVidia card and it too froze. So I really have no idea why the same clip works on one computer but not on the other...

Ken,
HEVC (H265) doesn't work on my W7 PC. It's my understanding that VSX links to the Windowa h265 Codec only availavle since w10

Both the h264 & h265 clips play OK in VSx9Ult (19.6.0.1) here.
Can confirm the h264 is heavily pixalated. The h265 is much cleaner.

My question to you then would be how many libraries do you have in your program? Can you import other clips at all? Do you have any third party codecs installed? What device made the video? If you were to remux the file, say in Freemake video converter into another mp4, does it work?

Re: MP4 file crashes VSX
Thx for yr reply. I reduced the number of libraries in X8, X9, and X10 to the minimum. Some default ones can't be removed. I got the clip working in X9 but not in X8 nor in X10. The clip works/converts normally in several converters and SW players.
It seems as if VSX has memory allocation problems with 16 ref frames encoded h264 streams.

FWIW, I can insert the clip in X9 and X10 without any problems. Neither program freezes or stutters. This is on my desktop, Win10, i7-4770 @ 3.40GHz

Re: MP4 file crashes VSX
Ken, can you confirm that you have the freeze problem when you enable yr dedicated card.? This quesrtion because, while further thinking on the large buffer needed for the 16 ref frames decoding, accesing of the graphics caard could be involved. Turning off the HW accekeration for the editing proces solved the freeze problem in two (integrated gaphics only) computers. On another PC with a dedicated 1060 card it made no difference, no freeze HW acc on or off.
Stil confusing but I get convinced that the VSX HW acc mode is nit compatible with Intel integrated graphics (460 en the newer 530)

Yes, definitely. VS freezes when I insert that clip when using both the on-board Intel graphics or the NVidia card.

Ken, did you also try the HW acceleration setting for editing on and off?
