How to customise the video thumbnail

Post by ArtistScope »

The thumbnail displayed for my latest video shows a transition of 2 slides which doesn't mean much to anyone. I would have thought that the thumbnail that is display would show the first slide, but this is not the case.

I have sifted through my help files but cannot find a solution...

How can I control/edit what is shown as the video's thumbnail?

Hi

Video Studio should display the video thumbnail from the library or timelines from the first frame

However Windows Explorer does not do that, for video files does not show the first frame, this of course can be confusing, but it’s a Windows Explorer issue not Video Studio.

Your image at 250 x 150 ish pixels is to small to see details.
Is that a screen shot from Video Studio UI or Windows?

That was a screenshot of the "large" thumbnail displayed by Windows. It doesn't depict just ONE slide, instead displaying the animation BETWEEN the 4th and 5th slide, which of course is useless for any sort of identification.

I have been searching for a solution and came across mention of apps that can edit metadata that Windows reads, but yet to find/try a solution that does work.

Any clues will be most appreciated.

I stumbled upon an app called "MediaMonkey" that seems to do the trick, by adding an image when editing file properties. The free version did the trick.

I would like to see this feature in VideoStudio.

Video Studio does not have a problem in displaying the thumbnails, its a Windows Explorer issue.

You missed the point. I said that Media Monkey can add an image to the correct location for Windows to use as the thumbnail, instead of using 2 samples merged. So there is a location to store such an image if added.

Again, I would like to see this feature in VideoStudio!

I have missed the point also .. I don't understand your problem at all. What does "can add an image to the correct location for Windows to use as the thumbnail"? What location, where?

Perhaps if you explained exactly what you are trying to do and what you are doing?

Please start by reading my first post... noting that the thumbnail displayed by Windows is useless for any identification because Windows has created the thumbnail automatically by sampling the 4th and 5th slide and merging them. In fact what is portrayed looks like a snapshot of the between slides animation. hence it is useless for identifying what the video is about.

Yes, your forum support has mentioned that it is not a VisualStudio problem because it is Windows that creates that Thumbnail, and I am not arguing with that. So I spent hours researching and testing and found that one app can add an image to an existing video that solves that problem...

Now doesn't that look better? Now one can easily see what the video is about and tell the difference between other videos in the same folder. That is what the thumbnail looks like now, and I think that all of your clients will benefit by adding that simple function to VisualStudio, instead of making me edit every video in another app each time I build.

Also, by fixing the thumbnail, we won't have to upload a separate image to use as a thumbnail each time that we upload to YouTube or Facebook.

Can I just remind you ArtistScope that the programme we use and discuss here is called VideoStudio - not Visual Studio - that is a specialised Microsoft programme - - I have changed every one of your posts up to this point , but it would help if you posted with the correct programme name

Thank you

and just to add in passing - YouTube creates it's own thumbnails - chosen from 3 different places in the video and you get to choose which one is shown

AND - it is not our programme, clients or company - no one here works for Corel we are all (including admins) unpaid users just trying to help others - there is a dedicated Corel support if you wish to use that but you generally have to pay for that and it is often far from satisfactory

Yes, I did mean VideoStudio, thanks.

Re YouTube and Facebook video uploads, they probably use their own sampling method to get a thumbnail... I know that their sampling is complex because they even check the sound tracks against known copyrighted works and other videos enabled for monetization. .

What might be displayed on the first frame of a video at full size may not be suitable at thumbnail size. When I added an artwork via Monkey whatever its name was, the thumbnail shown was as I wanted it

Now that is a feature that should be included in VideoStudio.

So lets all form a picket line outside Corel HQ.
