How badly has the Free Trial of VideoStudio been Crippled?

Post by GlenBarrington »

I'm looking to start creating Photography based Video Tutorials, so far, I've looked at Camtasia 10, And ACDSee's Video Studio 2 (How can ACDSee and Corel have 2 products so similarly named without making lawyers wealthy beyond belief?). Since the tutorials will be about photography (and sometimes about PSP X8, X9, and eventually X10), I want the BEST possible display quality for YouTube and/or Vimeo.

In both cases I've encountered image quality issues with their finishing and upload processes once they post to YouTube. They have fully automated options but the quality is crap, you need to really work with both to get the best upload quality to display on the upload services. It's been a struggle to learn these two products, but I'm finally getting the quality I'm looking for. The features list for Corel VideoStudio X10 places it roughly in the middle between Video Studio 2 and Camtasia.

BUT I can't get the X10 free trial to finish and post to YouTube, I can't even get it to finish and save to an edited mp4 on the hard drive. Is this on purpose, or is there something wrong with my installation? If I can't evaluate how easy it is to make the finishing and upload changes to an edited project, I'll just spend the extra $100 and buy Camtasia. I'm unlikely to take someone's word on something like this. I've already gotten over most of the learning curve with Camtasia and ACDSee, I can't believe Corel wouldn't be prepared to give me SOME idea on how effective their finishing and publishing functions are!

For sure the Trial version is missing lots of stuff. I guess Corel just wants you to evaluate the User Interface and see all the features that it has. Purchasing is rather painless to get the full version, and Corel will refund you the purchase price if you decide after some short time (I think a week or two, maybe more read the return policy when you buy it).

Essentially Corel has stripped out anything for which they have to pay someone else a licence fee. I guess the bean counters figure that that is potentially a big waste of money, given that the trial is free but would be costing Corel if those features were included. They seem to miss the point we have tried repeatedly to make to them that they are in fact shooting themselves in the foot as people thinking about buying the program usually want to try the very things that have been stripped out. They then decide not to buy, and Corel loses more money!
