TIF compression

Post by JosephK »

When working with 16-bit TIF files, LZW compression usually makes the files bigger.

PSP 19 has no problem reading ZIP compressed TIF files created by Photoshop. Seems odd that PSP 19 cannot write ZIP compressed TIF files.

Just a side note about 16-bit TIF images and LZW compression:

It's a well-known fact that LZW compression of 16-bit TIF images always gives a larger file size. This is not a problem with PSP (or any other image editor), simply a fact of life.

You can search the Web for the technical details of this, but the simple explanation is that because 16-bit images contain a huge amount of pixels which differ from one another, the LZW compression algorithm must create many more data tables than for 8-bit images. This means that the resulting file must be larger.

Yes, I think it can be eeeeeasily done...

Correct, the LZW size problem is not a PSP flaw. I was just including it as background info for the missing option of ZIP compression.
