Can I turn off the spam?

Post by Zus71 »

I bought Corel PainShop Pro x9 today and I keeping getting in-application SPAM that is really getting on my nerves. This would be bad enough if it were free software, but I paid for this and even getting advertising for software I have bought! I get this SPAM constantly in some windows and often when I do saves I get a huge SPAM popup window over my work. I seem to recall getting this when I started the application, but think there was an option to never show this again on the "startup screen" ..... however there seems to be no way I see to stop the rest of the SPAM.

Is there any way to turn ALL this application SPAM off?

Thanks in advance.

If you go to Help >> Messages you can untick the option to receive product related messages, and opt not to be informed of other stuff.

This may help for some messages but not all. I've had the messages un-ticked from day one but I still get annoying pop-up ads on the task bar.

Corel needs to STOP this annoying practice.

Kathy_9, that looks like one of those system tray messages. To get rid of those, you have to take the drop-down pictured here and make sure it's set to "do not show me tray messages."
messages.jpg
That message box will own show up in the account that the program was installed under. In my case, I installed it under an administrator account but I use it under a standard user account. So I had to use "Run as Administrator" to get to that option.

Also, delete the Messages folder just in case any are still left on your system. It should stop PSP from downloading new messages, and since the messages will be empty it also shouldn't bring up any old messages. No guaranteeing this works, but it's the closest I've come to stopping all advertisements.

The only way I've found to positively turn off the spam is the following..... Open Ctrl Panel, Open Windows Firewall, under Advanced Settings, select Set New Outbound Rule. Fill in the appropriate info & no more adverts.

It seems that PSP itself puts out the call to Corel for adverts & spam. This type of rule can be disabled temporarily if needed to access the User Guide PDF that is online. Or simply download the PDF & keep it on your local machine.

Guess it pays to read. Since it didn't have a check box in front of it I totally overlooked it. Thanks.

I tried Run as Administrator and still didn't get the dropdown box.

It's not "Run as Administrator" that's the important part. It's that it be the same account that you installed the program with. However, I can only prove that with my own computer. Never had anyone else confirm this works for them.

I have two accounts on my computer: Admin, and Levi. Levi is a standard user, so it can't install any software or make system wide settings changes. When installing PSP it asks me to provide the password for the Admin account to allow installation. When I run PSP under the Levi account that drop down is not visible to me. When I use "Run as Administrator" it runs the program under the Admin account and I can see the drop down. When I log into the Admin account and run the program regularly (not as admnistrator) I still see the drop down because it's under the account that installed it.

I see the same thing at work. I installed it under the "IT" account but my personal account (also an administrator account) doesn't show the drop down. When I run it as IT or while logged in as IT then the drop down is available.

Understood. But therein lies my problem, and a weakness I have regarding how User accounts work. So I'll explain the situation I find myself in.

I'm the only user of my computer. Whenever I install any program that asks me a question about who can use the program I always select the All Users option. I do not recall if PSP asked that question on installation but if it did I would have selected All Users.

When I go to C:\Users I find 5 different categories: All Users, Default, Default User, JoeC, and Public.

So what I need to know is, when I open PSP in the usual method of clicking the shortcut to the executable, and given what I said above, which User account is being used? How can I tell? How can I be sure I'm opening PSP with the User account I used to install the program?

TIA for any clarification!

Which user are you logged in as? That's the user that's running PSP. When you use Run as Administrator or Run as User you can potentially change that user just for that program. "Install for all users" just has to do with where the program is installed. Not with who is doing the installing. When you run the installer and it asks for permission or for a password, the user indicated is the user that installed it. So if you only have JoeC as a user, and when installing the program it only asked for permission then it runs under JoeC. If JoeC doesn't have permissions to install software and there is a default Admin user that you use to install software with, then it would be with that user.

I am logged on as user JoeC. If I simply open PSP from the shortcut and go to Message Preferences I only get the 2 checkboxes, not the dropdown. If I Run As Administrator I also get the same thing.

If I check the Permissions for user JoeC I get four entries: SYSTEM; my full name (with my email address in brackets); Home Users (with the short nickname for my computer in brackets); and Administrators (with the computer nickname, a backstroke and Administrators in brackets). Clicking on each one of those individually under the Security tab shows that all of them have full permissions.
