new computer
hi everyone.
k, so I finally upgraded to a new computer. my PSP program is on my old laptop and I figured I could just transfer it over. of course the moment I actually need my program/disc(which I had saved all this time in it's box) I now can't find it. so I emailed corel to ask for help. they informed me that my program was no longer supported, and that I would have to buy a new one. I think I was running PSP4. I never even thought of that, just figured it could transfer over maybe. they offered me 15% off to go toward a new purchase. but I looked at the site, and it was 20% off anyway. i'm sure that 15% wouldn't be able to be added on top of that, so it was actually pretty useless.
long story short, I just purchased PSP8 for over 60% off at a store. I look forward to getting it installed and getting back to playing.
question. I am guessing that my older version is no longer supported because it would have been for windows 7.?? would that be right?
does that mean that this new program will only be good until the next windows? then it's purchase a new one again?
corel suggested I come here for any questions.
thanks in advance for any info.

Re: new computer
For what it's worth I have never had an issue with older versions on new versions of Windows. Maybe I'm lucky but from Win XP, Vista, Win 7 and Win 8.1, I've never had an issue with older versions of PSP. (No I don't intend risking Win 10).

Re: new computer
Certain versions of PSP are only officially supported by the company on certain versions of Windows. And Corel only supports one or two versions back of PSP. None of this tells us if a version of PSP will work on any specific version of Windows. All it tells us is if it's not on the official "supported" list then Corel won't help you. It could still work just fine without issue on the latest versions of Windows unless Microsoft does something crazy.

Re: new computer
I've got a similar example. My preferred software was PhotoImpact X3 - the final version before PSP took over, which I had upgraded successively since around 2001. It did everything I needed, and it ran perfectly, so I didn't want to switch to anything different (though I have various other software for different purposes).
I'm also on the Windows Insider program, and with each of the last 6-10 Windows 10 builds PhotoImpact wouldn't run, so I simply rolled back to the build where it did. However, there were Windows 10 features I was beginning to miss out on, so I contacted Corel and was understandably informed that PhotoImpact was no longer supported by Windows 10. I was disappointed, but not surprised - X3 had run successively on Vista, Windows 7, and on Windows 10 until recently, and I knew it was obsolete by at least 5 years and probably more.
I'm using PSP X9 now, and it easily does what PhotoImpact could do and a lot more besides. But the moral is that you can't trust or expect older versions to keep running forever as operating systems progress, so be careful if you've come to rely on something. They may - as I discovered - just stop without warning, even if they install.
I'm not bitter or anything. Good ol' PhotoImpact has had a good innings. Just sorry to have to say goodbye to an old friend.

Re: new computer
ok.
when they told me it was no longer supported, I assumed that to mean that it is now useless. which, I suppose it might be, if it wouldn't be possible for it to run on my new 'puter. just kinda disappointing to have to buy the same program over again, simply for a windows 10 version.
I just finished getting it loaded onto my laptop, and I can't really see any improvements so far. actually less than what I had even, as the effects plugins that came with my PSP4 aren't even on this much, much newer edition. and I bought the Pro X8 Ultimate package as well.
I loaded the extra disc, the "perfect effects" and "aftershot" are on my desktop. the "perfectly clear" is in my plugins. there was another one, "creative collection". I don't know where it went to, I cannot find it anywhere so far. any suggestions where to look?
overall, i'm not all that impressed with this purchase. I feel like I've taken a step backward from what I had with PSP4.

Re: new computer
I'm curious as to what went backwards, as far as I know they haven't really removed anything, just added things. The extras like effects plugins are just addins and not part of PSP itself. So, as long as you can install the plugins you should be able to use the ones you got with X4. What effects plugins came with the x4? I know about the KPT plugins, which are downloadable with X8 and x9 as well.
The creative collection are extra resources like tubes, shapes, frames....I don't remember what all was included in it. You'll find them by using the features that use those resources inside PSP like Adding a picture frame or using the picture tube tool. They also gave you some backgrounds in your Public Photos folder.

Re: new computer
thanks, good to know.
I am just starting to play with it. just on first inspection, the thin I used the most actually, was a set of plugins that I had with 4. I never purchased anything extra for it, so it must have came with it. off the top of my head, I can't remember what it was called exactly. probably a filter package. it may very well be that those are now regular features in here somewhere, I just haven't come upon them yet. I will have to go look at my PSP4 version to know what i'm thinking of. surely they are in 8 and I just haven't found them yet.

Re: new computer
Just remember that PSP now comes in both 32 bit and 64 bit versions and has done since X8 IIRC. Before that it was only 32 bit. Many -- indeed most -- of the plug-ins available are themselves 32 bit and so won't work with the 64 bit version. But you can always apply them in the 32 bit version.

Re: new computer
ahhhh, ok.
I can check and see if the 32 bit version has them.
the plugin was "nik siftware", "colorefex pro 3.0 complete"
it was a large package of things like, tonal contrast, pro contrast, control color range, sunshine, low key, high key, ink, cross process, duplex, foliage, and a whole lot more.

Re: new computer
The Nik filters are wonderful, and about a year ago, or a little more, they were released again, this time also in 64 bit version, and they are free. So you can reinstall them and they will apply to both the 32 and 64 bit versions, if you have installed both versions as most of us have done.

good to know, thanks.
yes, I was loving the NIK package I had with psp4.
where do I find them? from corel?
they are attached to my psp4 on my old laptop, so I am guessing I need to find a current package?
