I have some videos taken 25 years ago with a Canovision 8 E40 video camera, some years ago I had these tapes converted to DVD, but since then, having moved home a few times, the original tapes have been lost.
Now trying to import into VS has caused numerous issues, I used WinDVD to import the files onto the computer but the .VOB files would not import into VS, so I converted them to mp4 using Format Factory, then split the video with Boilsoft Video Splitter.
I can now import into VS but now have another issue, I want to cut a video and save it, however, when selecting Save trimmed video, I get the following message "The frame size (728x544) does not match the settings and therefore cannot be trimmed"
VS is set to ask if I want the project settings to match the video properties, always select yes, but no matter what project format I select I cannot get the User-defined Frame size to become active, it is always greyed out, so am unable to save trimmed video
Any ideas, or is it back to the drawing board and start the whole process again

Re: Save Trimmed Video Problem
Hi
Was there any reason why you did not use video studio, import digital media to transfer the dvd to pc.
The vob files should contain a 720 x 576 mpeg2, if indeed the disc is a standard dvd.
The unusual frame size 728 x 544 is causing the problem.
If you set project properties to same, try avi options, then the saved trim video should work.
I would import disc again to standard dvd settings.

That did not workasik1 wrote:set your project to XVID AVI
When the original tapes were copied to DVD for some unknown reason, the company doing the conversion managed to make a complete mess up of the order, so I have DVD which have clips from 1992, 1994, 1997 etc. and even they are not in order.lata wrote:Hi

So to import direct into VS is really not an option, when you consider the amount of splitting, saving as trimmed video, copying to new folders and after all that, not having copies that I can use with other NLEs
The .VOB files on the discs are 704x576, WinXDVD changed it to 728x544.
Unfortunately, not having the original tapes I cannot check the resolution originally recorded
I am now starting importing again, this time using WinXDVD and using MPEG Video (mp2) as the setting, this seems to work OK and the cut video can now be saved as a trimmed video, however it is not that WinXDVD seems to have copied as 23fps instead of 25 fps and the resolution is now 720x540 and not 704x576 as per the .VOB files

Re: Save Trimmed Video Problem
Hi Robert
Have you tried importing the disc using Video Studio
Right click timeline for Insert Digital Media, locate the disc or the TS folder.
The video Vob files should import without any conversion other than the extension to MPG, I’m sure VS does that, so no settings to make, other software may re-code the video clips whilst importing???
When we suggested setting AVI you have to change the frame size by using the User Defined option, only available when using some codecs not all, try Microsoft Video 1 compression, that’s standard DV-AVI.

Re: Save Trimmed Video Problem
Hi Trevor,
Imported disc into VS, using Insert Digital Media from timeline and can confirm that the files imported without any conversion, the video having a resolution of 704x576 which matches the .VOB files on the disc, which is strange for a DVD, as that is not standard 4:3 resolution.
Importing is very slow and seems to create a new chapters at its own discretion, so the importation created more than 30 chapters, whereas this particular DVD only has 3 distinct locations.
WinXDVD imports the DVD content much faster and whilst it imports the whole DVD as one chapter, then using Boilsoft Video Splitter, to split as I require, the whole process is still much faster and neater than importing via VS.
You will probably have left on your holidays by now, have a great and safe time

Hi Robert
we do not fly till 10 PM, so plenty of time, just in limbo trying to pass the next few hours.
Then a 13 hour trip, at least can sleep one the plane.
oh when you import using VS choose the Titles only, do not choose any Chapters, then import will be one file per title.
Once on timeline you can Split by Scene, may help editing
I was more concerned with re-coding whilst capturing............

Under the international DVD standard, this is one of the compatible frame sizes, though I agree you don't see it often.RobertOZ wrote:...the video having a resolution of 704x576 which matches the .VOB files on the disc, which is strange for a DVD
