I am presuming that these are the same files as you have used previously - but have you resaved or moved them since that time - check that they still have a bit depth of 32 bits - otherwise no transparency

thanks for the reply Brian. Yes the same ones I always used for years. They are 24bit. How would I save as 32bit?

You will have to use an image editor to add an alpha channel and remove the existing background.
Here is an online tool that looks like it should do what you want, on the chance that what I just said has lost you and you have no idea what I'm talking about
http://www167.lunapic.com/editor/?action=transparent
I just found this on a quick Google search, so I can't vouch for the site or the quality of the results, but it looks like it might do the trick.

Re: .png files are not transparent for watermarks
an alternative would be to apply transparency within Videostudio if your watermark png has a fairly plain background
try this
put your watermark png in an overlay track and right click - from the pop-out choose "Customise Motion"
when the module opens use the controls at the bottom to set size and position as well as 'opacity' (transparency)
don't forget to copy the settings from the left keyframe to the right or else the effect will slowly change as you play the clip
how well it works depends on the image you use for the watermark

Re: .png files are not transparent for watermarks
this problem seems to be workstation specific. the other station as usual I can drag a 24bit png in and watermark works fine. idk why.

Hi
Are you adding the png images to the overlay track or the top track, you should use the overlay track.

Re: .png files are not transparent for watermarks
Perhaps you could tell us exactly what you are doing - 24 bit images do not support transparency - are you actually using Chroma-key
