How to burn Dual Layer DVD's in WS2

Post by froggy_doddy21 »

Hi, How do you burn DVD+R DL, or DVD-9 disks using WS2? The only spot where I see DVD-9 as an option is through the DLT tab. But it's greyed out there (because I don't have a DLT drive). Any info would be much appreciated.

Thx

If you have the latest updates and you put in a DL disc to a compatible burner, everything is automatic. In my case, it shows I have 8 Gb and not 8.5, in the same way as 4.7 Gb is only 4.3, although, theoretically, it should allow 8.1 Gb.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds simple enough. My only question now is aren't we supposed to tell the program where to "switch" layers? OR does it do it automatically while burning and pick its own time to do so?

I believe it is better for the system to decide.

Hi! (first message) :D

So you mean that all I have to do is just work on the movie as usual, put the DL disc in the drive and just press 'burn'? Is this right?

Yes. That's all I did.

Thanks! I really hope that in a future version of Workshop it will be possible to decide the 'layer break' point!

I think the layer-switch may be predetermined by the blank DVD. That is, as you write to the disc, it switches when the first layer is full. But, that's just a guess.

Yes, but it would be great to have the possibility of putting the layer break in a precise point, for example at a chapter break, or between a fade-out/fade-in, etc.

ok, so I have downloaded the new updates including the duel layer patch and there is no change.

Do I need to the the patch file in a certain program folder or should downloading the patch just work automatically from the desktop?

anyhelp please

thanks

Riddle me this...

I'm used to doing single layer discs for my company, but have suddenly been asked to produce a DVD9 for a special release.

I have a finished project file that I burned to DVD9 - all went seemingly well there (after downloading the latest DVD Workshop patch). When I went to perform a surface scan on the disc with isobuster for errors, that also came up fine.

However, when I went to play the disc, some of the links were not linking where they should. For instance, the enter photo galler button was now linking to a random movie chapter - as was the link that I had to behind the scenes footage - it linked to yet another random movie chapter.

I did a few tests. I made sure that my original file was linking correctly - it was.

I burned the project to a DVD5 - project came out correctly.

I tried burning just the iso and using a 3rd party application to burn the actual disc - same problem with the links occured.

So what is happening? What am I overlooking when I go to make the disc that is causing the links to become disorderly?

The project contains avi movie files:

1 File for first play which is the Legal
1 fetaure film file
1 photo gallery avi (with under 99 chapter pts)
1 bonus feature file
5 trailers
6 menus
16 chapter pts (on main feature only)

So thats about it I think!

Thanks!

Have you tried it on a variety of dvd players and pc's?
Does it always act in exactly the same manner?
Linking to the same wrong files?

Hi Graham,

I've only been able to test it on 2 DVD Players and on 2 PCs resulting in the same issue.

I tried something different:

I used DVDW2 to burn DVD Folders to a removeable HD
I then loaded that drive into my editing machine and used Nero 6 to burn the folders to DVD9.

I checked the disc and everything now appears to be correct - so now I'm not sure if it's my Plextor burner or the DVDW2. Thinking about testing the whole scenario I used beforehand on the editing machine - having Nero burn the disc and an ISO simultaneously and If that disc checks out incorrectly, I'll then try to burn the ISO with Nero and see how that fares.

Too bad these DL discs are so pricey - otherwise burning coasters wouldnt make me quite as irritable as I am now!

One thing to note - before I moved over to the editing systen for the burn, I tried burning the folders with Nero on the DVD Authoring system but kept recieveing errors at the beginning of each burn-try.

I was able to burn the ISO on the DVD system through DVDW2's start menu, but that resulted in the incorrect linking as well.

Try checking your DVD burner manufacturers website for updated Firmware

Firmware is software that resides inside the DVD burner and enables it to communicate with your PC. It can be likened to the BIOS of a computer. The manufacturers update their firmware every now and again to reflect new brands of Disc that appear on the market.
