New Computer, Win10 VS9.6 Problems

Post by jch39 »

I am having a lot of strange startup problems after several years away and new operating system.
1. I can't get VS to recognize my camcorder when trying to capture video.
2. Old .mpg videos made with prior versions of VS don't display or play in time line.
3. Old .vsp project files don't seem open like they used to...
I need a refresher course. Maybe just cockpit errors...

Legacy driver http://www.studio1productions.com/Artic ... wire-1.htm

MPG is a wrapper, what is inside YOUR wrapper - Exactly what is INSIDE the video you are editing?
Report back with the codec details of your file, use the programs below... A screen shot works well to SHOW people what you are doing - For Windows Internet Explorer press the PRINT SCREEN button on your keyboard, and then do CTRL-V to paste the screen print from the clipboard into a forum message

Thank you John,
1. I wish the legacy driver idea had worked out but after I downloaded the legacy MS driver, it turned out to be the same driver already installed. I tried it anyway but no joy. The Win10 Device manager clearly shows a Firewire device and when I plug in the camcorder in I hear the Bell but the Capture window says "Either there is no capture driver or no device connected" The video Source selector control is disabled. I suspect the problem is VS-Win10 related... I have opened a bug ticked with Corel tech support.

2. The test video file properties are: Mpeg2, 24 bits, 1440x1080, 16x9, 30fps, 25Mbps, rendered years ago in earlier versions of VS. There is nothing to see now except a blank timeline with the cursor moving. No video frames visible. The preview window also remains black.

Sorry to labour this John but I found this bit very convoluted - can you confirm that the driver you downloaded actually has the word legacy at the end like so
1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy),

I found that just downloading and installing the driver did NOT install it to the device - you need further steps - please - just for me - go to Device Manager and double click on the "IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers" and check the actual driver installed - it MUST have the word (legacy) at the end - if it does not then it will not work

but the problem may also be connected with the fact that you can't see mpg video - it might be a good idea to check if you have the latest drivers (yes I did read that it was a new computer - but it happens) for your sound and video cards

and a last little note for John - despite 13 years on this forum I have never ever found out how to paste images into these forums - always have to use the "upload attachment" function - I would really appreciate you telling me the secret of how to paste an image into this forum (in any browser)

you need to be very careful how you connect the firewire cable or you fry the board.
I never use my camera with mains only with battery when connected.
Firewire is not like USB.

Convoluted it is. I've never seen a more kludgy method to install a driver... However, the word "legacy" does NOT appear on the final driver visible in the device manager. The Microsoft site downloaded a file entitled "1394_OHCI_legacyDriver.msi", which I had to execute to install the driver. The device manager calls this "1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller". Sadly, it does not work.

The word Legacy is vital - you must be seeing this to get it to work

click on the image to see it bigger
click on the image to see it bigger

After you downloaded the driver from Microsoft - did you RUN it and then re-boot - you should now find this in C:/programs
click on the image to see it bigger
click on the image to see it bigger

It is the NEXT bit that I meant was convoluted

I did reboot after running the msi file.
However, it is only visible in c:/Program Files (x86) as 1394 OHCI CompliantHost Controller (Legacy), which has two sub folders, x64_driver and x86_driver. Ah-ha. Corel is installed in c:/program Files - not in x86 program files....
This is probably the problem...

No as you have a 64 bit machine then the main Corel programmes will install in C/programme files - X86 is only used on 32 bit machines - - if you have the two folders then you need to do the following - which is what I found the convoluted part

In Device Manager - double click on the "IEE 1394 Host Controllers" device - this will open to show the driver - - double click on the driver to open the 'properties' dialogue - at the top of that click on "driver" - you should now be seeing this - EXCEPT - mine has been updated yours may be slightly different if you are not yet updated.
IEEE legacy driver.PNG

Click on "Update Driver" and this should appear
IEEE legacy driver update..PNG

Click on - "Browse my computer for driver software" - - - in the next box which occurs click on "Let me pick on a list of device drivers on my computer" - - - in the next box click on "Have Disk" - - - in the next box click on "Browse" (bottom right corner) - use the next window to browse to "C:\Program Files(X86)\1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)" - then open that folder to find two more folders - as you have a 64bit machine choose the X64 folder - inside that you will find the "Legacy 1394.exe" file - - SELECT IT :D :D :D - - - click "open" in that window - - - goes back to the "Install from Disk" window - - click'OK' - - - goes back to the Update software window - - select the driver in that window and click 'Next'' - - you should see the driver install - then a window which says the driver has installed successfully - - close that window and check in device driver that the legacy driver is now attached to the IEEE controller

fingers and toes crossed - check in Videostudio for the camera operation :| :|

Hi

After you choose “ browse my Computer for Driver Software” another window opens.
Now choose the Browse option Do Not choose " Let me pick".

Browse for the C:\Program Files (x86)\1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)\x64_driver

Still does not work. The driver is still in Program Files(x86) and probably inaccessible by VS.
I may have to repeat the MS download.

Yes - that is where it goes to - but if you follow the procedure I gave above you go to program files (X86) and select it - which installs it on your computer in the correct place - wherever it starts from

the fact that it has downloaded and installed to the Program files(X86) folder does not matter - have you been through the long procedure I gave you above -- it is not VS that need to access the driver - but the IEEE controller

does the IEE Controller in Device Manager now show the legacy driver - have you been through the procedure exactly as I gave it and selecting the x64 driver

I followed your procedure precisely. "Legacy" appears in the device mgr driver name. The Driver File Details window shows two driver files: c:\windows\system32\DRIVERS\1394bus.sys and ohci1394.sys
