Capturing mini DV

Post by flr9003 »

Hi. I have Coreal Videostudio Pro9. I am looking to convert mini DV from a camcorder to my PC. I have read here that it is better to use the capture and software first and then use Corel to edit after. I have Windows 10. Is anyone familiar with the following device? It seems to be plug-and-play. Thank you for your comments.

I don't know that particular device - some of that genre work well - some not so well - but all will lower the quality of your digital video by changing it to standard mpeg

but if you want the very best transfer then every mini DV camera I have come across is fitted with a "Firewire" (i-link or IEEE1394) port - you then need a similar port on your PC and then a 4pin to 6 pin firewire cable - once connected and powered up capture your DV straight into Videostudio as .avi

No it's not recommended for best transfer but only as last option.
You should aim for something like this

I transferred about 100 movies from DV tape...

While you can use Screen Cap from the VS 8/9 suite but from personal experience I noticed when capturing this way the frame rate gets slight dropouts... While it isn't terrible I found the intermittent video frame drops were a bit irritating for me...

So after a few days in after doing it this way I noticed this (since my Sony Camcorder had a firewire outlet on it) I went and bought a simple Firewire card for PCI and they came out perfect.

Hi All. Thanks SO much for all your replies. This forum has been so helpful to me. To asik...PERFECT. I bought that kit. My Dell PC, brand new, Windows 10, recognized/plug and play no issue. Bought an old Canon camcorder off of Ebay and plugged in with the Firewire. Fired up Corel and hit capture and wow...recorded the whole tape. Absolutely NO issues.

Appreciate all. F
