Why these PSP8 background processes?

Post by terrypin »

I've had PSP 8 running for most of today on this Win 10 PC. But when I closed it I noticed that there were still four instances of it in Task Manager > Details. Under TM > Processes they appear in the Background Processes section.

Image

Anyone know how that can occur please? Why would there be any residual 'background processes' after closing the program?

I've now closed them fromTM and restarted PSP 8. It now appears as a single instance in Detail and in the Application section of Processes, as I would expect. So presumably it's an issue that somehow occurred or evolved over a period of working? Puzzling waste of resources.

It wouldn't surprise me if those processing are preparing the promotional messages that appear after you close PSP.

Many of us have had experience with PSP being closed and leaving a process still running. Usually we know it has happened because trying to open PSP again fails due to the process still running. I haven't seen an explanation of why it happenes and it usually just happens on a random basis. Haven't had it happen to me for some months at least. What surprises me is that you have been able to open PSP even though you have had the process running in the background, although if you have several versions of PSP that have left a process behind that could explain it.

Thanks Joel. Can't yet work out what's happening -it's odd indeed - but if I do I'll post again.

Note that this is Jasc PSP 8, and not X8.
I don' think PSP 8 had a messages folder as Jasc was not as intrusive as Corel became.
Also it was possible to open at least three instances of PSP 8 unlike the X versions.
So perhaps you may have started the program more than once

Aha, missed that bit..
Of course, in those days you could open PSP more than once, such a good idea, a shame that was discontinued.
Well spotted :-)

Thanks hartpaul, I'm sure that must be what happened. After the initial launch from the taskbar icon I open images in PSP by several methods and somehow some of these became 'instances' instead of just child windows. It's happened since, too. The point that puzzles me is why, after closing PSP8, there remains one entry in Task Mgr. until I remove it.

Try opening PSP 8, minimise it,
open a folder containing an image.
Restore PSP8 , on the task bar switch to the folder containing theimage, and drag and drop the image into PSP 8 workspace.
Then close PSP8 and now check and see if anything remains in the task manager.
I get nothing using that process.
You can then use other methods that you use to open PSP 8 and again closing try and experiment and find out what causes that remaining entry in Task manager.
