MP4 portrait format from iPhone MOV

Post by ChrisOliff »

I am recording a number of short iPhone MOVies to go into my WordPress blog.
I have done this successfuly except for one problem.
The iPhone image is vertical (portrait) whereas I am only able to produce the MPEG-4 from it in landscape format. This means that the MPEG is created on a black ground with the image centred.
I tried SHARE>CUSTOM but the settings options are all landscape and I can't find a way to get the 'user-defined' to work - it is greyed out.
How do I get a simple vertical, portrait, format that will correspond to the iPhone MOV?

Chris, if you output as avi you can set it vertical.

The source video is vertical. Why output to avi vertical?

The idea of 'fixing' the black bars is not OK because I want to fit the video into a vertical space.
I'll look at the avi suggestion but, I must say, it seems to be a complex problem for something that must be so common - surely lots of people want to add MOV videos to their sites?

I also have to be the Grinch and ask what is not so simple about holding a smartphone the "correct" way i.e. landscape, when making a video???

I agree with you Ken. It's unbelievable how many of my friends and family constantly post vertical videos to Facebook, it drives me nuts.

Hi Chris

Unfortunately we hold the phone vertically when speaking, and tend to hold the same way for recording video, this is wrong

So you may be correct in that video editors should be able to cope with video recorded the wrong orientation, the editors have been designed to create landscape video.

Video Studio will allow us to User Define the frame size using AVI.
Go to Settings - Preferences and change the background colour from black, any colour you choose.
That will allow you to id the actual frame size within the preview window.

Now go to Settings – Project Properties and choose Project Format as DV/AVI
New- give the template a name
AVI tab – Compression - I would use MJPEG Compressor or Microsoft Video 1

General tab – User Defined – set your frame sizes.
Ok to close the template
Your Project Properties will be changed to match your settings.
The preview screen will show the frame size.

Add your video to the top timeline.

You may have other problems converting / rendering the video

Go to Share
Top left “tick the box” Same as Project Settings.
Then Start

Does that render the project without problems.

If it works, save the project, you can reuse that project for your Iphone video recordings.

You should run a few tests to establish which AVI compression works best for you, size of video and quality.

Thank you very much lata
I want the vertical to fit into my blog pages that way - not because I am using iPhones - for horizontal I could easily use the laptop. The videos are just one person speaking so it also needs to look right and fit a tight space.
Thank you for the guidance - unfortunately I have absolutely no experience of videos so hopefully others can also be a bit more patient. What is important is the outcome we seek - hopefully I can learn the process from helpful people.

Hi Chris

If you are able to upload a sample to a sharing site, Google Drive , One Drive, Drop Box etc.
We can download and try your video to see if it is possible to edit and render the portrait format.

But as I say I think you will be limited to AVI type video.

Thanks asik

Yes you are correct we can render the portrait to portrait choosing Mov and creating a suitable template.

I had thought that the project properties frame size would be a problem, but render seems to work ok.
At least with the samples I made.

I can output to wmv and mp4 also... but my ways with X9 are different than average Joe.
