VS8 destroys hard drive?

Post by Paul Grieves »

Hi everyone

Ive been using VS8 for a while now to edit martial arts events to DVD. A friend of mine told me he'd been using it for about a year for his motor cycle stunt videos. He had increasing problems with rendering on his last DVD (taking up to 3 days and then crashing). He also had problems when editing (as I have had too) with the software becoming increasingly slow until crashing.

He asked a pro video producer about his problems and told the guy he was using VS8 and the pro said "DON'T use VS8 as it embeds itself in your hard drive over time and corrupts it".

This was not much comfort to my friend who had all of his project files on his hard drive. He was advised to put in a new hard drive, transfer all of his files over, finish his DVD and then get rid of VS8 and use something else in future. He ended up losing the last 15 mins of his footage but got the job finished (well, minus the last 15 mins) and now uses other software.

I was just wondering if there is any truth in all of this. Has anyone else had similar problems? If so, are there any fixes for VS8? Would upgrading to VS9 be the answer or does VS9 have the same problems?

I'd be very grateful for any input on this as I can use VS8 OK now but I don't want to end up having to buy a new hard drive if VS8 is destructive.

Thanks

Greevo

He may be a pro as far as video production is concerned, but he knows exactly squat about computers if he actually believes that.

There was a memory leak problem in UVS V8 that was fixed in the V8.01 patch. That could have resulted in the program getting progressively slower, eventually exhausting all memory including the virtual memory provided by the swapfile, and then crashing.

UVS 9 seems to be much more stable than any previous release I've used. The first patch for it just appeared, but it addresses problems I have not encountered myself.

Thanx. How do I get the "V8.01 patch"? Is it free?

Yes, the patch is a free download from the Ulead website:

Yes, it truly does embed itself. First the nanoprobes are formed out of specific magnetic patterns on the drive. Then they begin setting up tiny structures on the drive surface. This affects the function of the read/write heads. Soon they take over the entire volume of the drive, and it then spreads to the rest of the PC. Expect it to attain sentience soon - watch out though, it will develop a taste for organic materials shortly thereafter.

Well, thank you for that... graphic description.

I have just had my first experience of what my pal told me about though. I've edited a DVD of a total fighting show and the first disc went OK but the second (less then an hour long) crashes at 61% when rendering. Same spot every time. Each project (there are 8 (each one an individual fight)) will render on it's own but together they will not.

Any help would be much, much, much appreciated!
