Jittery Stills

I am having problems inserting still images into a video project using Video Studio. The source images are 720 x 576 TIFF files (for PAL).
The render mpg files play back great (as does the final DVD) on the PC monitor. But when the DVD is played on TV, any still images having horizontal lines will quiver and shake badly. I assume it is something to do with interlacing since all is well using the PC monitor.

I tried an experiment where I made a DVD of still images using the original large image files (obviously Video Studio had to convert these to 720 x 576), also 720 x 576 JPEG versions of the same files. I then used my Hi8 camcorder to film prints of the original files. And finally, when making the DVD using Movie Factory, I made a slide-show using the original, and TIFF & JPEG images.

The result of my experiment - the original files had the same problems as the TIFF images but the JPEG images had a 30% improvement although some images still jumped a bit. The Hi8 images were not as sharp as the image files but there was absolutely no shake at all. The slide-show had a 99% improvement for all still image file types with only the occasional problem.

My question is this... What is the difference between Video Studio render files and Movie Factory slide-show files that cause Render files to suffer from bad horizontal shakes but not the Slide-Show files?

In other words, how do I import images using Video Studio and get the same DVD quality as Movie Factory slide-show?

To anyone who has bothered to read all this - Thank You!

You are quite right in your assumption. It is the interlacing.

What I usually do is to introduce a slight vertical motion blurr, 2 pixels worth of it should be sufficient.

Good luck.

I've found the difference between MF making slideshows and VS is MF
uses "FRAME-BASED" and when you are rendering a file in VS your
settings are "Interlaced".
If you mix a slideshow with a regular video it will of course be interlaced so
I don't usually combine them.

"Frame-Based" for pictures works for me.
Don't mix a slideshow with motion interlaced video if possible, otherwise
rendering with conver the frame-based to interlaced.

Hope this helps,

MD
