PaintShop Pro X9 corrupt files
Hi,
I recently upgraded from PSP X8 SP2 to X9 SP3.
Some pspimage files that I started in X8 and continued to work on in X9 are now impossible to open.
On a clean machine without any install of PSP, I cycled through X8 RTM/SP1/SP2 and X9 RTM/SP1/SP2/SP3 but none of them are able to open the file. Each time the program reads the data from disk, but then hangs @ 100% CPU (1 thread) until killed by task manager. Here is the stack trace from Process Explorer (Sysinternals):
ntdll.dll!NtReadFile+0xa
KERNELBASE.dll!ReadFile+0x74
CoreFileFormats.dll!CJFileDisk::Read+0xa2
CoreImageFormats.DLL!GetImageCodec+0x44b2f
CoreImageFormats.DLL!GetImageCodec+0x43b8f

CoreFileUtil.dll!CFileFormat::DecodeImage+0x2c6
CoreFileUtil.dll!CFileUtility::OpenImageFile+0x3ae

Corel PaintShop Pro.exe!TUnknownCoreImpl<IPSPModeController>::Release+0x64d6
Corel PaintShop Pro.exe!TUnknownCoreImpl<T2IInherit<IMatPalAppContext,IMaterialServices> >::Release+0x7ac8
I've read several similar cases on the forum, but found no solution so far. I spent an enormous amount of work in these files, so would be really grateful for any advice to recover them.
Thanks.

Re: PaintShop Pro X9 corrupt files
This has been mentioned before and seems to be an incompatibility between an earlier version of X9 and a later updated version..
The first version of PSP X9 that came out in august 2016 produced version 19.0.0.96 (A)
Update 1 produced 19.0.1.8 (B)
Update 2 produced 19.0.2.4 (C)
Update 3 / SP1?? produced 19.1.0.29 (D)
Update 1 addes the Python libraries which were missing from the later versions if you downloaded a later version. This has been corrected on the Corel website so that a direct load of version D now contains the python libraries. However Update 1 also introducec a bug in the save as pspfile producing a pspfile that could only be reloaded in version B.
Each of versions A,C,D produce pspfiles that will all load into any other version of PSP X9 A, B, C, and D.
Solutions:
Find someone that has only updated to version B and get them to load your files and save them as compatible to PSP X8 and they will reload in any version of X8 and X9
Find your original download which may have been version A or B , uninstall PSP X9 and reinstall the earlier version and only update to Update 1 (B) if required. Then load your 'corrupted' files and resave them as pSP X8 compatible. Then complete your updating to version D and you are good to go.

Re: PaintShop Pro X9 corrupt files
Thanks for the advice, but it seems I can't open the files even with X9 version B.
I switched directly from X8 SP2 to X9 version D without using the intermediary A/B/C versions.
In attachment I've added a crash report from X9 version B - but the same happens in all versions of X8/X9.
Edit: I could send one of the files over if you or someone else would like to have a look at it.

Unfortunately crash reports do not mean much to me. Would be interested in seeing one of your corrupted files - try and post a smaller one for others to test.

Here's a link to one of the files: https://fil.email/C4f3V
It's 600MB - I don't have much smaller files that won't open and this one is actually the most critical for me.

Re: PaintShop Pro X9 corrupt files
I used this little tool: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/what_is_hang.html
I also found out if you start PSP with SHIFT and CTRL pressed, a built-in debugger launches, but its output is not very useful in this case.

Re: PaintShop Pro X9 corrupt files
Thank you for that. I tried loading the file in the different versions of X9 and in the Update 1 version (B above) it would load to about 95% and then stop with no error message and a freezing of the system.noli wrote:Here's a link to one of the files: https://fil.email/C4f3V

In my testing with a much smaller file I always got the error message when loading in a B sourced pspfile into A,C or D that the file was not a valid file.
So no luck with your corrupted file.
One reason for continuing to work with the devil you know (older versions of PSP) until the new devil has settled down.
Don't commit new and important work to the latest versions of a program. Quality control is just not there anymore.

Re: PaintShop Pro X9 corrupt files
No idea what I'm talking about here!!!! But will Draw or other Corel programs open the PSPImage file? https://support.corel.com/hc/en-us/arti ... s-Suite-X5 You will see PSP on the list.
Just for the heck of it I've several programs and none of them will open any part of a PSPImage file.
Just a thought!
good luck.

Re: PaintShop Pro X9 corrupt files
Sorry but I have just tried opening a PSP_image file in CorelDRAW X7 and it advises the format is not supported. Nor is it list in the drop down menu of acceptable formats in the File Open dialogue.

Ok, you experience the same behavior with the file. Very frustrating that the program reads the file for the most part but then just gives up at the end.hartpaul wrote:So no luck with your corrupted file.

Anyway, lesson learned here ... never mix PSP versions on the same file.

Re: PaintShop Pro X9 corrupt files
Further to my post above, I discovered afterwards that if I used the "Import" command instead of "Open" in CorelDRAW, then PSP is listed. However, I still could not get any of my PSP-image files to open.

Re: PaintShop Pro X9 corrupt files
Having read various threads about various patch builds for X9, I'm confused so need clarification.
If I start with the original version installation (build 19.0.0.96), can I simply download option D (the third patch) and will it install all of the previous patches plus the python libraries? And if so, does doing so fix the issue of some pspimage files not opening?
If the above is not correct, and until a final fix comes along, which patch or patches should be installed (if any) to remove most bugs and make pspimage files compatible with previous versions?

This is insane- Just won't be upgrading to X9 if everyone is having this problem.

Many of us started with
PSP X9 install 19.0.0.96
Update 1 version 19.0.1.8 (installing this cured the errors) { Which added the Python packages}
Update 2 version 19.0.2.4
Update 3 version 19.1.0.29
Update 3 was supposed to include Update 1 and 2 but omitted the Python Libraries.
For a time the latest versions sold produced an updated version 19.1.0.29 but had left out the Python libraries.
From the sticky I gather that Josephlin has now had this corrected such that all version of X9 sold from Corel by download will be 19.1.0.29 AND will include the python libraries.
If you have an earlier version missing the python libraries then you can download the Python package and install the python Libraries
This is all in the sticky thread:
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=60729
Rondo said " This is insane- Just won't be upgrading to X9 if everyone is having this problem."
X9 as being sold from Corel now should be fully updated and have the Python Libraries.
You can probably test with the trial version. Many are not having any real problems and it seems very stable and has corrected some errors with X8 in particular re adding the direct Save button.
