Need help understanding the use of lights

I've been able to create my desired 3D moving text but I can't seem to get my head around how to control lights.
I want to have a light moving across my text. The idea is to have the text hard to see (dark text on black background) but have the highlights of each letter show as the light moves across in front on the text.

Any suggestions ?
