"Cannot start the preview graph" HELP!

Post by Brendon »

I'm using MSP 7.0, and I'm trying to capture a large series of video's from Mini DV via Firewire.

I can generally run VC okay, but sometimes, when I try and load the capture section, it displays an error message "Cannot start the preview graph" and will not let me start any capture.

It usually does this whenever I have previously captured something. Then when I try to start another playback, to mark the next scene ready for batch capture, it displays that error message. Previously, the only way to fix it has been to reboot my pc. But it's getting frustrating when I'm trying to download files, and either have to sacrifice a download, or not get any work done.

Any ideas?

I got this problem a lot with an old firewire card. I had it once since I went to a new computer - when I was using a battery in the camera during capture, and it ran out of juice halfway through.

Perhaps your PC is not seeing a continuous connection to your camera? Try updating DirectX and your PC drivers, especially your mobo driver if it has built-in Firewire.

Is your MSP7 installation fully patched to 7.3 or not? There were some preview graph problems in earlier builds, but they were patched.

I have a firewire card and an ATI All-In-Wonder. I've been trying to transfer some 8mm video to the computer using the ATI card and I have been receiving the same error message. I've not found an answer to my problem until moments ago.
In Media Studio Pro 7, go to Capture|Video on the menu.
Check the box that says "Force to use preview mode"
Click "OK".
The capture should begin. At least it did for me.
I've tried it several times, checking and unchecking the box. It'll only capture when the box is checked.

Of course I could have always captured using the ATI TV app that came with the All-In-Wonder card, but that would have been too easy.

I hope I've been able to help. :P
