No Burner Present
Hello - I'm running into a problem burning BlyRay discs out of Corel X9. I'm using a Pawtec external 6x BD burner/writer. Get to the final screen in the process, which sees that an optical drive is present and mapped to "D" drive and that a 25Gb BluRay disc is loaded in. All good, but then as soon as I hit "Burn" (and after the message "This may take some time ..."), get the message "No Burner Present". It'll run ok for a DVD project, but not for a high def disc. Also, if I re-create the BD project in Movie Factory 7SE, (using the same Pawtec external optical drive), it burns a BluRay without a problem. Any ideas? Thanks guys, Clive

Re: No Burner Present
Can we assume you bought the Blu-Ray burner module for VS and installed it in X9?

Aaagh! Didn't realise the BluRay burner module was an add-on. Not sure if I bought this in a previous version of VS (previously used X3) - how would I check? Probably easier to just buy and install anyway - could you remind me how to do this please? Thanks, Clive

Re: No Burner Present
Purchasing a Blu-ray plugin is a new imposition from Corel, open VSX9, open the Help menu, then select "Purchase Blu-Ray disc Authoring" then follow the instructions, the cost is US$7.99

Go to Share - Disc - is I see 4 options DVD , Avchd, Bluray and SD Card
If you see Bluray then the Bluray Add-on is installed.
now click Bluray does it open the burner module.

Re: No Burner Present
Plot thickens.. On Help Menu, do not have "Purchase Blu-Ray disc Authoring" as option and after selecting "Share" and "Disc, do get the 4 options, including "BlyRay", suggesting I have bought the BluRay burn option already for X9 - does ring a bell now I think about it. However, have just tried to re-do a burn to a BD, with same result - actual error message is "No Burner Exists" - think I reported "No Burner Present" previously, if this makes a difference. Can confirm the screen shows an optical drive present at "D". Anyone got any further ideas? Thanks, Clive

Re: No Burner Present
Hi Clive
Certainly running out of ideas, seems strange that Movie Factory recognises the burner ok, yet Video Studio gives that error.
I assume you have tried creating a Bluray Folder, that of course does not use the burner, then try a program called ImgBurn to burn that folder to BD.
I normally do that so I can play the BD folder to check quality before committing to disc, saves on making those coasters.
OK
Did the Pawtec come with its own software, and have you installed that.?
You could try reinstalling video studio, when uninstalling choose to remove personal settings.
As a last resort you should contact Corel Support, maybe they have other ideas, certainly the first advice may be to re-install the program.

Re: No Burner Present
Thanks Trevor. Haven't tried creating a Bluray folder yet, but will give this a go later today. I don't have the ImgBurn software - what's the best site to obtain this from please? ImgBurn.com? The Pawtec drive didn't come with its own software, just "plug and pray" I guess! Under Control Panel/System/Device Manager, system says device is "Working Properly" and checked if drivers are up to date and it says they are. The Pawtec website says that as many pc's don't come with Bluray viewing software, then it offers the opportunity to purchase third party Bluray viewing software such as MacGo for $39.99 - instinct tells me I'll be wasting forty quid, as it doesn't sound to me that this is what I need. So, I think the best way forward is if later today I create a Bluray folder and if you could advise on best/safest site to download ImgBurn from and we'll give it a spin. Thanks Trevor, Clive

Re: No Burner Present
Hi Clive
Out of interest when you burn a disc do you first render the project to a compliant video file, then use that file to burn a disc, or access the burner module with the project open and showing in the timelines.
Most here would recommend creating the compliant video to burn the disc, then the burning process does not convert/render again. Convert title not required, the process starts with Convert Menu followed by the multiplexing.
Although I cannot see that your approach whatever used will cause the Burner error.

Select "Mirror 7" to download direct from the author's site http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
DO watch the install screens... since paying for ImgBurn is voluntary, I have read that recent versions include added installs, so you will/may need to UN-check the added programs during install
I still use an older version (works for the DVD's I create) from before anything else was "bundled" to make the author some $$

Re: No Burner Present
Sorry it’s taken a couple of days to respond to last posts from Trevor and John, been away. Anyway made some progress, in that successfully created a Bluray folder and then successfully burnt it to a BD using ImgBurn. So that’s good. Doesn’t explain of course why I’m getting the “Burner Doesn’t Exist” message out of X9, which I suspect is because of pilot error, ie I’m doing something incorrectly somewhere! I came to Corel VS ten years ago on VS X2, where the disc (DVD only at the time) was produced in VS. Then upgraded in due course to X3, where disc production was separated out to MovieFactory, MF7SE. Now I quite liked that separation. Sometimes there can be quite a bit of time and work involved at the disc creation stage, especially if there a quite a few chapters and you want to do something creative with the menu etc. So in MF I quite like being able to do a “Save” early on in the process and being confident that your work is being saved off as a separate .dwz file.
In X9 (as far as I can see) we’re back to disc creation being part of the main VS programme again. So, do the usual editing of movie clips and popping onto the timeline etc, then once complete, render the whole project into one video file ie .mpg or .m2t. Then use this rendered file to create a disc. So in X9, click on “Share”, then “Disc” icon, then DVD or Bluray etc. Then add in the rendered video file already created and then embark on the disc creation jobs, ie create chapters, menus etc. But instead of creating a completely separate .dwz file (as with MF7SE), when you come to save, the only show in town appears to be as a .vsp file. So should I create a new .vsp project with nothing on the timeline and go straight to “Share”, “Disc” etc and pull in the rendered video file to do the disc prep work on – will this ensure I can save and then retrieve work done on chapters/menus etc? Once I’ve clarified this bit, will then re-check if I can then burn direct from VS – if I’m not following correct procedures, this may explain why VS doesn’t think there’s a suitable optical drive present.
Finally, when creating a standard def DVD, I like to create a .iso file, which I can check view in VLC Media Player and run as if it’s a disc and then use the .iso image to burn a disc. Understand I can’t do this with HD/Bluray files, hence have to create a folder. Is there a way of viewing the folder as if it’s a disc, ie starting with top menu? Thanks guys, Clive

Re: No Burner Present
Hi
First I do not think you are doing any thing that will influence the disc burner issue.
I just do not know why you get that error, but cannot see its you.
It’s a plug and Play USB, I assume its plugged in all the time.?
Try unplugging the drive, boot Video Studio open burner module, then plug in device?
I just do not really know, I think you should contact Corel Support?
Your workflow seems ok
1 / Edit the project
2 / render to AVCHD
3 / Start a new project – Share Create disc Bluray, opens burner module
4 / Add video created in 2 above, you can add more files here to capacity of disc.
5 / Create Menu, burn Bluray Folder / disc
6 / Close burner module shows save to project, then prompts me to save the project
I give it a name like “Holiday Disc”
That will save the burner menu details, but the timelines are empty, so when I open the project again the name reminds me its for burning not editing.
So I go to Share Disc the disc option is selected, open the burner should show the menu.
DVD Iso can be burnt to disc using Video Studio Tools – Burn from Disc image
Bluray ISO or Folders can be burnt using ImgBurn, at least I think you can burn the BD ISO using ImgBurn

Notes/ideas from another forum I browse
Right click the program icon and select Run as Administrator, which is NOT the same thing as running the computer with a Windows Administrator account, and which fixes several "odd" problems
I don't remember the names (because I didn't/don't use any of the programs) but I do remember a discussion of "some" programs that take over access to a writer (packet writing software ???) and that totally removing that software would all the program you want to use to be able to communicate with the drive again... sorry I can't be more specific but, as I said, I never used any of the programs mentioned so just generally remember the discussion

Re: No Burner Present
There was a time quite a few years ago now, where one of the Nero suite components -- InCD -- did precisely that: it effectively took control of the CD/DVD burner and denied access to it by other programs, including Video Studio. At that time, you had to uninstall InCD, which thankfully appeared separately in Control Panel > Programs and Features (or whatever it was called at that time). But Nero finally took the hint and no longer installed InCD automatically, and then I believe dropped it altogether.
