Splitting Video

Post by Rollason »

I have uploaded, to the Timeline, video from my video camera which contains two videos which have downloaded together. Having edited one of them I now want to burn it to DVD but don't know how I can split it from the second video. I want to work on the two videos independently. Having edited the first one I want to burn that to DVD and then work on the second one but can find no way to split the two to see them as two separate videos. I would appreciate some help. Many thanks, Rollason

If I understand you, you transferred 2 videos from your camera to a single video. Is that correct? Why did you combine them when transferring?
How did you transfer the 2 videos? What source media: tape, HDD, memory stick,??

Add you merged video to the time line and find the point on the timeline where you want to split the video and create a split. You should now have 2 segments. Save that project as Project A.

Select the 2nd segment and delete it. Save the project as Project B.
Load Project A again and delete the 1st segment. Save the project as Project C.

You now have 2 separate project (B & C) which correspond to your 2 videos.

.... or you can make the cut at the selected point, then highlight the first part and go to File > Save Trimmed Video. This will create a new clip. Do the same with the second half. Thus you will have two new and separate clips which you can edit and render as separate projects.

Thank you for those replies. However No.1, How do I split the videos? No.2, How do I highlight the video? Thanks again, Rollason

1. To split, if you look down to the bottom of the preview screen, you will see on the far right corner of the screen an icon which looks like a pair of scissors. Position the mouse cursor in the time "ruler" above the timeline where you want to make the cut, and left click on the scissors. A vertical line will appear through the video in the timeline.

2. To highlight, position the mouse cursor anywhere in the first half of the clip and left click. A bright yellow line will appear around that clip. That is called selecting or highlighting. You can do the same with the second half...

I have read the manual and know that the scissors icon is used to split a clip. I didn't realise that this would split the whole video as I don't understand how the programme can recognise a split clip from a split video. A number of clips have been split and therefor each split clip, I guess, splits the whole video. Incidentally, the timeline has two videos because they were recorded concurrently and therefor appear as one. Rollason

When you use the scissor tool it cuts whatever is at the cursor position - it doesn't matter whether this is just one of a number of very short clips or part of a very long clip - so first of all move the cursor to where you want to make a cut - then select the clip at the cursor position (may be long maybe short) - this means click on it in the timeline so that there is a yellow line all the way round it - when we talk of selected clips we mean clips with yellow lines around them - because we have clicked on them

Click on the scissor tool - this will (virtually) cut what is in the time line - whatever length of video that may be - you can then select and delete bits to the left or right as you wish

I said "virtually" because you must remember that every thing in Videostudio is virtual - it just looks and acts as though you have cut the clip - but the fie on your computer is not modified - so if you make a mistake which you cannot rectify my using the 'undo' function the just delete what is in your timeline - and import the video again .

Oh dear! I don't think that I am making myself clear. I take on board all that has been written on this topic. All I want to do is split the video in the timeline into two pieces and burn each piece to disc separately. A hypothetical case, two weddings recorded one after the other and downloaded to the computer in one piece. These go into the timeline as one video, the two weddings need to be burnt to DVD independently. How can this be done? I can delete each clip of the second wedding separately and burn the first. Repeat the process deleting each clip of the first wedding and then burn the second one, but is there a better way. ie. selecting the first wedding for example and burning that and then doing the same for the second wedding. I hope that this makes the whole thing clearer. Regards, Roy Rollason.

Yes I fully understand what you are doing and why - I assume you have an older video camera which just adds the next video on the end of whatever was recorded previously and transfers as one continuous file when you capture/import

I guess many of the other users on here have a more modern camera which records onto an SD card and creates a new file every time you press the record button - but I still have and use cameras which use tape and record one continuous file until you remove it from the camera

Your method of deleting all second - then all first is good - and not a problem - if you find it easier to do it that way then that is fine for you to continue to do it.

There is another way which does not involve any deleting - so perhaps less chance of deleting the wrong thing

you can try this

put the video in the timeline but do NOT select it (no orangy/yellow line around)

look immediately under the preview window at a white line with a white arrow above it and an orange marker each end below - also just below that the words 'project' and 'clip'

click on the word 'project'

now hover your mouse cursor over the RIGHT end orange marker - the mouse cursor changes to a two headed arrow

left click with your mouse and slide left - as you do this a new orange line will appear just above the timeline with it's end moving left as you slide - keep sliding - you can release the mouse and pick it up again while you move the timeline

keep sliding until the orange line and cursor are exactly where you want to end the first video

Now go to "Share" at the very top -- and choose the top icon down the middle (a computer) which chooses to make a video that you can play on a computer

then choose the mpeg-2 option - required to make a standard DVD

now right down at the bottom of the page - to the left of the start button - click to tick the box labelled "Create preview range only " (that means only the video under the orange line in the timeline )

now create the video file - which you can play on your computer - or import to the 'Create disc' module to burn a DVD

Now go back to the main 'Edit' tab and using the mouse slide the orange cursor as far as it will go to the right - orange line disappears

Now repeat the whole process but this time moving the LEFT end cursor to slide to the end of the start of the second video

it is quite simple when you actually do it - but as I said - if you are happy just deleting bits then no problem

Hurrah!! Thank you, Brian. That is exactly what I've been trying to get at. That doesn't come in the manual from what I've read, and I've downloaded the manual and read it cover to cover. I appreciate everybody's help. Many thanks, Roy Rollason.
