Import files with xmp sidefile

I was trying to use ASP 3 to import some cr2 files which had been edited in another application and have a xmp sidecar file. The program created a file named _img_0001.xmp from a _img_0001.cr2.
The XMP files created from ASP were named _img_0001.cr2.xmp. I tried to rename the xmp file from the other editor accodingly, but even then ASP would not import them.

How do I import the files with xmp information? Does it have to be saved to the file itself?
