Printer choices?

Post by terrypin »

It's been a few weeks since I last printed an image from PSP 8 so maybe my memory's at fault. But when I choose File > Print shouldn't I get offered a choice from installed printers?

Here, on this Windows 10 PC I just get the one choice, whatever I've set up via Win 10 settings as the default printer.

In contrast, other applications such as IfranView display the drop-down list.

Hi Terry -- is it PSP 8 you are talking about from many moons ago, or X8. If it is indeed the latter, then there is something missing from the image you posted. In my X8 (and X9) there is another button -- labelled "Printers" -- between the Print to File box and Properties button. That brings up the full list of possible printers and not just the default one which shows up in the top left. See attached image.

If indeed it is X8, then I guess doing a reset might bring that button back. If it is version 8, then I will have to defer to the forensic archaeologists here who also have that old version.

I use PSP 8, not X8.

When the print dialog pops up try hitting ALT+P. I saw it on a suggestion post, technially for PSP9 but it seems this problem has reared its head for users from time to time and I can't find any real good information on it.

Another option is to change your Default Printer to the one you want to choose. You don't have to close PSP to do this. Just go into your printers and devices and change the default.

Anyway, those are two workarounds I've found, but no real idea why it's doing this. As Ken suggests, you could try resetting the workspace. I think PSP8 had that option, though i could be wrong. :P

I use PSP8 and my print dialog box looks just like Ken's screenshot. You're definitely missing the "Printer" button.

Thanks for all the replies so far.

Alt+p just checkmarks the box 'Print to file'.

Loading several different workspaces made no difference.

I've had quirky behaviour with this particular printer before, so I now rather suspect that as the cause, not PSP 8.

--------------------

I also tried running PSP 8 in XP compatibility mode. And as Administrator. Neither helped. But unfortunately, having removed both, I'm now plagued by Win 10's pesky message every time I start PSP 8. :(
It's a frequent issue raised in Win 10 forums. Anyone here using Win 10 encounter it and know a fix please?

I don't have Windows 10 but you will have to make changes to your User Account Control. This link is to a Windows forum with some info on that. You should also be able to make exceptions to whwhich programs are excepted from UAC notifications, but I'm not too sure about that.

Thanks Joe, but I'm familiar with the UAC options, which are incredibly inflexible. The only way to avoid getting the message I described is to choose the fourth (bottom) one. That, of course, leaves you exposed to the occasional malicious program. I therefore have my system set to the third choice.

After hours of research, the only way I've discovered of switching it off for individual applications (PSP8 in this case) is complex, using the Task Scheduler. Security overkill IMO.

However, the good news: after switching the 'Run as Administrator' on and off a few times and rebooting my PC, I can now start PSP8 without that annoying message.
