Hi, I tried the X7 earlier, liked its non-destructive AVCHD editing feature, and purchased X8 without testing. Seems that I made a mistake. First, the app would not start at all on my system. After installing some latest updates, it starts up, but whenever I navigate to Share page it shows a dialog with "Encountered an improper argument" error.
If I simply load some clips it still shows options on the Share page, but after I drop a clip on timeline, it clears the Share page of any output options and formats.
Please, help!
My system is a Windows 7/64 Pro machine, 16GB RAM, 4TB drive.
Intel i5 3.3GHz, Intel HD4600 integrated video.
Corel version is 18.6.0.6 (64-bit Ultimate)

Re: Corel VideoStudio X8 - Encountered an improper argument
Hi
First a windows update back in February caused problems where programs would not start,
Corel provided a fix for that in the way of a Hotfix / service pack, view this post.
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=58892
I suffered the Encountered an improper argument error, very difficult to find the culprit.
There are few users suffering with this which makes it difficult to find a solution, I think I was using X7 at the time,
Since then I have not had a problem………..although updated to Windows 10, not sure if this is showing using Windows 7 only?
Please read this web page describing just what I encountered.

Sorry but I do not have a definite solution but can only suggest some options to try.
OK
From your image I notice your project properties are using standard definition 720 x 480 whilst I assume your video properties are AVCHD
Can you go to (F6) preferences, set Show Messages when inserting First video….
Re-boot the program to set those changes to Preferences, otherwise a crash will clear the changes.
Add a clip to the top timeline should show a message to match the video properties,
If you view the right hand panel, will show your video files properties, what are they?
Copy and paste the text to this post.
That will set the project properties to match the video files properties.
Does that improve things.
If this problem continues you should contact Corel Support.

Re: Corel VideoStudio X8 - Encountered an improper argument
I deleted the app, then reinstalled it from the CD, then installed all the updates one by one in sequence. I missed hotfix #1, and it would not install later saying it cannot figure out app version. Also, it took me some time to realize that update to 8.5 is in fact a service pack #2 - Corel needs to name its packs better. Anyway, after I installed sp1, hotfix 1, sp2 a.k.a. 8.5, and sp3, the app seems to work.
So: SOLVED.
