Hello,
I would like to know which file format I should use if I'm uploading my video straight to Youtube. There are 6 selections besides Audio and Custom. My camera saves in .Mov, but when I use the "Web" selection, it only gives me options to save in .meg4.
But when I want to save it to my computer, I can use the other formats. Anybody know why that is?
My goal is to save my videos with the lowest usage of data that I can with losing quality as little as possible when I'm uploading to the internet.
Any ideas?

How long are the videos? how long you want to spend uploading them?
For 90min I use ~2MB WMV's .

Re: File saving for uploading to youtube
For uploading to Youtube (which is on the "web") or for generally uploading to the internet many people consider mpeg-4 (.mp4) to be the best compromise between quality and file size - so that is what Videostudio offers for the "web"
There are other newer formats available which some people are beginning to prefer and I am sure in time they will be added to Videostudio - but not yet - and I do not think you need to worry about those yet
when you are going to make a video for use on your computer there are many different things you may want to do with it - you may want to play it on your computer - you may want to put it on a USB stick to plug into your TV - you may want to link your computer to your TV direct - you may want to 'stream' to a TV or tablet - you may want to burn a DVD - you may want to put it on your phone or tablet - there are many options to view a video and some formats work better with one device than another - so when creating a video to your computer Videostudio gives you a number of options so you can choose which is best for the use you are going to give it.
At the current time I would suggest that you use the mpeg4 option for your needs

Hi
Mov type video is supported by YouTube so why not render your video to Same as Video Properties.
That way you should be retaining the original quality.
If you need smaller file sizes then run your own render tests, maybe convert to Mpeg4 or WMV, you can then compare quality with the original.

Re: File saving for uploading to youtube
Hi Brian,
The main thing I want to do with videos is to upload them to Youtube and others like Facebook, my Website, etc., not really to save them for my own use. They are tutorial videos and demos for art.
I have been using the .mpeg4 format, but then I got a camera that saves in .mov format and the file size is about half of what .mpeg4 is. I was just wondering if there was something to watch out for, like loss of image quality.
Thanks.

Re: File saving for uploading to youtube
Hello Trevor,
Yes, that does make sense to upload with the original properties and format that the camera uses. I just wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing so I don't waste time.
Also, when I go to the share step, and click on .mpeg4, the estimated output size is only 1.26 gb for .mov and the output size for .mpeg4 is more than double that with 2.90gb.
I'll upload using .mov to experiment with the quality but I think it'll be okay.
I'll get back with the results when I'm done to let you know.
Thank you all very much!

Re: File saving for uploading to youtube
rk, what makes the size is the data rate and not the mov vs mp4.
you can set the data rate to what ever is practical for you.

Re: File saving for uploading to youtube
Asik,
Somehow, I missed that while I'm teaching myself the more advanced areas of VS. Thanks for telling me. I checked it out and found out how to adjust the date rate. I'll just test and see what seems to be an acceptable quality after I upload the video to youtube, etc.
Thanks again,
Bob
