Relink
I have tried many ways to relink videos to the Timeline without success. I have the originals in a video file in my folder and the VSP files but cannot relink the two of them to work on in the timeline. Anybody any ideas that would be a help? Thank you. Rolly.

Re: Relink
What do you mean by "the originals in a video file in my folder and the VSP file"? Each of the "originals" would of course have to be separate files in order for them to be relinked

Re: Relink
You relink to the video files in File explorer - not to thumbnails in the library

Re: Relink
Thank you, I understand, but 'how' does one relink. I have found the original file and can open it but there appears to be no way in which this relinks to the clips in the library. Rolly

Re: Relink
open the library and clips which need relinking usually show a yellow film frame on them - click on the thumbnail and a box will appear with options in it - one of which is Relink - select that and a file explorer type window will open to allow you to browse to the video and select it
sounds as if you are doing it the wrong way round - - start with the thumbnail - not the video

Re: Relink
Thank you for that response. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to resolve my problem. I capture video into the library and the timeline satisfactorily and some clips open with a little yellow box in the left corner and some with a little black box in the corner. Sometimes they open with a black box in all of them. The timeline opens satisfactorily with all the clips shown irrespective. I can edit all clips. However, when I put the computer to sleep - I find this the most satisfactory way to avoid loss of linkage - the programme opens up with the timeline requiring relinking but this does not always happen. If I shut down the computer the programme opens, more often than not unlinked. I have got as far as sharing and then found that the link is lost and I am unable to burn the video. I have selected all the clips in the original video download and shift clicked and carried them into the edit library. This usually seems to work but I have no clips in the timeline. I wouldn't expect there to be. I can select each clip and shift click carry it into the timeline but find it is impossible to select all the clips in the library and then shift click them into the timeline. Each time the whole lot deselect when I shift click to move them. I have tried reinstalling the programme but that makes no difference. I have tried various ways to deal with this problem without success. Is it possible that there is something amiss with the computer or am I just doing something wrong? As things are I am unable to burn this video and it's becoming really frustrating. I've spent about a month on this and am no nearer success. I would appreciate any help. Thank you, Rolly.

Re: Relink
Further to that last email. When I select the clip there is no yellow box round it and I get no indication to find via explorer the original video file. I should have mentioned this.

do not press 'shift' when dragging a selected block of clips from the library to the timeline - just left click and hold while dragging the block to the timeline
you might find it easier to RIGHT click over the selected block and choose "Insert to > timeline"
when you have finished editing for the day do you ALWAYS do a "File > Save" before closing VideoStudio - then close down your computer
when you start the computer again next day do you always do "File > open project" then select the name of the project you are using
if you can see the clip in the library -- and there is no yellow icon on the clip - - how do you know they are not linked

Re: Relink
Hello Brian, thank you for your response. I understand what you say. I have captured a video into the library and some of the clips have yellow icons and some have black icons. The timeline just shows a black and white strip. I have captured to library and timeline. The clips with the black icons will open up in the timeline but those with yellow icons wont. How do I relink these yellow icon'd clips with the original video as these clips in the original video wont capture and shift click and carry into the library?

Re: Relink
first go to "Settings >> preferences"
in the new window which opens look up in the top left corner for 'Relink checking' - there must be a tick in the box to the left of that - if there is not click the box and a tick will appear -- click OK at the bottom of the preferences window
click on ONE of the thumbnails with a yellow frame on it - - do you get the relink window

Re: Relink
Things seem to be getting confused. And this is the most frequent question my movie students have about using VS. So, resetting the discussion . .
Re-link simply means that the vsp cannot find a file specified in the vsp at the specified location - so it just puts those bars B/W there to mark it, and moves on. You may find a vsp has several or even most of the files in it marked this way, especially if the source files are on a thumb drive that isn't plugged in. The usual cause of re-link items is that the source files are on external media which is not plugged in, or that the vsp was generated on one PC and is being read on a second machine which has a different folder structure. For example, if the vsp expected to find the files on drive E, and the files on a second PC are there but on drive G, the vsp will "re-link" flag the source file when the vsp is read on that 2nd PC.
To re-link a barred item (meaning, fix the vsp so that the project file can find the source file you specified)
- open the vsp that gives the re-link bars.
- click on the 1st re-linkable item and either answer the re-link message (yes) that appears, or choose File/Relink from the main menu.
- a re-link navigation box appears, and the filename you want to re-link will be in the title bar at the top. Navigate to the location of the file (you said that you knew this), and select it. click OK. If you have to plug in an external media, do that first.
- that item should now be re-linked, and if all of the others are in the same folder, they will be re-linked too. But only on the 1st attempt. If you have been trying this several times you'll find that the software devolves to one-at-a-time.
Finally, if you are swapping vsp's between PC's, name the fixed vsp file for the related PC so that re-links can be avoided, which means a separate vsp for each machine.
