How to lock track sequences in VS X9?

Post by jungleexplorer »

I am not sure of the exact terminology to explain what I am asking here, so I will just explain. I am working on a video right now. In part of the video I have several items overlaid on the original track, like text, images and videos. This items are timed in there position down to the micro second. But now I need to make a change to the original video track near the beginning. If I do this, it will throw all the overlays tracks down stream out of sequence causing me hours of work to re sequence them. What I want to do is lock them in their position with the original video track, so that no matter what I do to the original track, they will maintain their position with it. How do I do this?

The function you require is called "Ripple editing" -- if you look to the left end of the timeline you will see small padlocks - click to close the top track one - then click the lower ones to lock each track to the top one

It is a little perplexing when you start using it - just note that you are locking tracks to the top one - if you move clips on lower tracks then "locking" will be over ridden - only changes to the top track will move clips in other tracks

Another option is to export the existing project to a video file. Then start a new project, add the just created clip to the timeline and then add any clips, etc before that clip. Using this method you don't have to worry about doing any "ripple editing".
