X3 Installs but Won't Run

Post by IanGreen »

Hi,

I realise I am talking about a very old product, but my usage is such I cannot justify (or afford) upgrading to the latest version.

After a recent system crash I had to perform a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit as well as all my programmes, including Corel PaintShopPro_X3.

The installation appears to perform reasonably well, although the progress bar does spend a lot of time at 31%, before informing me of a successful installation.

However, when I come to run it, all I get is the intro splash screen which sits there for ages, but no programme opens.
I have checked and found that the process for the programme is running (Task Manager) but that is as far as I get.

I do have Corel Graphics Suite X4 installed and all of that runs perfectly well.

Can anyone help me please?

Thank you,

Ian

Since this is a fresh install, do you get even a glimpse of the registration page which usually appears straight after the splash screen in a fresh install? If not, then I am going to suggest something which will sound strange, particularly if you don't use Internet Explorer. But go to Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced, and down at the bottom you will see a reference to Internet Explorer and a Reset button. Click on that. For some reason, Corel continue to include coding which somehow or other refers to IE and resetting it here -- even if you don't use IE -- seems to work to get beyond the splash screen of PSP (and Video Studio). It certainly worked for me and others have also reported success.

Hi Ken,
My thanks for such a quick response.

No I have not had sight of any registration page, but nor do I see any reference to Internet Explorer in the Internet Options part of Control Panel.

All I see on the Internet Options is a "Restore Advanced Options" at bottom right and wonder if that's the one you mean?

Regards,

Ian

That's a bit strange! I have Windows 10, but I seem to recall it was a Windows 7 person who drew my attention to this in the first place. Hopefully some other Win 7 user will check to see if they get the same as you. But this is what I get:
VS IE Reset.jpg
I have never varied those default Advanced Settings which your images show. But if you haven't altered them either, you'd have nothing to lose by pressing that button. Similarly, I have never used Internet Explorer, so pressing "my" Reset button should not make any difference either, but it does...

EDIT: I've just checked and it was indeed a Win 7 user who first suggested this back in 2012 before Win 10 ever appeared. You can see it here: http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 16#p250016 It is worth nothing that he suggested clicking both Reset and Restored Advanced Settings... But once again I have to say I am mystified as to why you don't have that Reset option available...

I realise that post was in relation to Video Studio, but there are a similar number in relation to PaintShop. This one, for instance, goes back to 2010 and attributes the advice to Corel Support! http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 43#p204443 Again it advises to press both buttons (assuming you had two!! :| )

Thanks for all of that --- Strange indeed.

I am in the process of rebuilding a Win7 Laptop so, during the next couple of days, I shall see if (a) I can get PSPX3 to work and (b) see what options I have compared to this machine.

I shall let you know in due course.

Ian

Hi Ken,

I still have not got round to finishing the laptop so that I can try an install on it.

However, I did download a Trial Version of X9 and installed and ran it straight away on the machine which will not allow X3 to run.

I am now wondering if I have a corrupted file, but it is the only copy I have.

Unfortunately, X9 does not allow for a "Custom Install" and forces the programme to be installed in the Programme Files Directories, something I vehemently resist.

Do you happen to know if there are any versions of PSP, up from X3 but below X9, which allows for a "Custom Install"?
It might be quicker for me to purchase an upgrade version to install and run rather than carry on messing about installing and uninstalling?

Regards,

Ian

I'll go out on a limb here and suggest that maybe one of the Advanced options (any one) need to be changed before Reset To Default becomes available. My Win 7 Home Premium shows what Ken Berry sees on his Win 10. Try checking or unchecking one of the minor options then click on apply & see what happens.

Hi TimW,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have tried several of the options (adding and subtracting) but it makes no difference.

As per my previous submission, I shall just go for any upgrade (on the basis my X3 is corrupted) as long as it allows for a "Custom Install".

Ian

PSP X3 has five patches available. Have you applied those ?

Patch 2 includes patch 1 so you only need to apply patches 2-5 .
Systems available Win7, Win 8.1,Win 10 Version 1607 Build 14393.2007 & version 20H2 Build 19042.867

Well I finally completed the laptop rebuild as well as achieving a successful installation and run of PSP_X3.

The laptop now has the facility, in Internet options, to do a reset for IE which, as reported, was missing on my desktop machine.

I can confirm the only difference between the two machines is that I removed all installation(s)/occurences of Internet Explorer from the desktop machine during the build as I am desperately trying to reduce the number of programmes in which Microsoft are involved, but without going Linux.

So, thank you Ken Berry, it looks as if you were correct in your assumption about PSP's apparent reliance on IE, although I fail to understand why X9 (trial) was able to run without it.

Anyway, my thanks to all who came to my aid on this one, I hope I can return the favour at some time in the future.

Thanks again,

Ian

PS -- I shall just leave X3 on the laptop, available for use as and when, secure in the knowledge the machine is not connected to the Internet!!
