Thank you gewb. But there is a little problem (for me) with your file. Because I don't have your pictures, it's hard to really see the same thing as what we see in the mp4 video. One way to really see everything would be that you export your project as a model (Template) and then upload that template. Normally, the pictures / music should upload with your project same as the ones I uploaded and that you can see from the link in my signature below. Good example : Under Files for all / Personal Templates 1/ Ma_realisation 10. Seven personal pictures included with the project.

Hello JaRo -

Umm, actually the VSP is all you need to play with the settings I used. (Also assumes default VS installation directories.)

1) Locate an MP4 video file of yours and one or more JPG files of yours.
2) Launch my VSP project file in VS.
3) When VS asks to locate the files, UNCHECK the options and cancel - the project opens with an empty Vid1 line and three empty Vid2 overlay entries.
4) Click on the Vid1 empty entry the right-click and select Replace Clip... then Video... Navigate to your clip and select it - it will populate the entry for my missing video clip.
5) Do the same for each of the three JPG entries in the Vid2 overlay track.

You now have my project with attributes but your media files to play around.

gewb: I viewed your video & I don't know if you addressed the need I have.

My requirement was to "select" a small portion of an existing video.
The portion selected does not have to be in the center of the video. It could anywhere including in any one of the corners.
The video selection does not have to be in a 16:9 aspect ratio. It could be square, long and thin, or short and fat, etc.

The video selection could be made larger or smaller.

The selected video should "appear" as a picture in a picture on top of the "main" video clip. It could appear in any place on the main video.
The location of the selected video on the main video could move across the screen. However for my requirement it should remain in a fixed position.

I should be able to apply a soft edge mask to the selected video.

The only way I could achieve this was to use the "cropping" effect with the same height & width values for the staring and ending key frames.
I had to deselect the fill color option in the customize effect panel.
On the main preview screen I moved the clip where I wanted it to appear and used the yellow handles to adjust the size and aspect ratio.
I applied the mask frame I wanted for the video clip.
I right clicked the video clip on the time line & then de-selcted "apply filter to alpha channel".

I will try to put a video on youtube which depicts what I did.

Hi again gewb,

I've tried to replicate your mp4 with the VSP you provided. As previously written, this could not be done. I explain. In your VSP, there are only two clips, one very short and one long on the main track. In your MP4, we see nine pictures and they all have something like : « pan/zoom effect, personalized motion, fade in/out. These effects/moves did not appear in the project after replacing your clip with one of my mine. Furthermore, your VSP was 1 min 30 and your MP4 0.59 sec.

Therefore, using your VSP, I've replaced the picture in main and first overlay tracks, inserted you MP4 in overlay track two, deleted the first clip of the main track and shortened the second to the same length of MP4. Everytime there was a new picture appearing in your MP4, I made a cut to it and to my main track, then applied some moves and appearing effects (sometimes pan/zoom, fade/in out with transition or personalized move, etc. ). You can see all this by going on the link inside my signature below. The project, I made all the work in, is called : DelaluzSample_mod2. I, then, exported it as a Template to my OneDrive. After that, I deleted the overlay track number two containing your MP4, saved the project as DelaluzSample_mod1, exported it as a Template. It is also available to anyone on my OneDrive. When we save it as a Template, we can provide the entire project to anyone. That way, people can use or modify it as they wish.

I'm conscious that my final product is not exactly as your MP4, but I've tried to replicate it since it is a very nice example for others of what can be done with VideoStudio (especially for the pictures in overlay track : Mask/Chroma key, Advanced moves in attributes, motion path that can be added to Library).

Hi delaluz,

If you provide on YouTube a video of what you finally succeeded to produce, could it be possible that you provide your VSP somewhere so that all VideoStudio users could also use it ?

It seems to me that It would be very interesting to « study » it. The « cropping » effect is something that many people has difficulties with.

Hello delaluz -

Based on your original post, I think I provided the direction you requested...not a template to fill in the blanks but an example showing you can do what you inquired about. Even so, my quick-down-and-dirty sample used the tools required to complete your desired output. (Time permitting, tomorrow I'll give my sample another go.)

If you need a forum member to create a template for you, just ask and preferably provide the source files. I'm sure several of us would enjoy giving you a hand.

I posted a video on youtube that shows what I wanted to do. It is unlisted so you have to use this link: https://youtu.be/0xfECBwD1_M

I used the compositing effect and a mask frame to crop & position the 2 ladies in the above video.

Please note that the video is only an example of the type of compositing that I wanted to do. It was the quickest thing I could throw together. I described how I did it in previews posts in this thread. I will re-state it if anyone wants me to.

I checked all of the videos that were posted in this thread. It appeared that except for BrianCee's stills of the dancers the other videos used the entire frame to zoom, fade, or appear on the screen. Maybe I'm wrong.

If there is an easier way to do this without the compositing effect please let me know how I can crop only a small portion of an overly video & position it (and scale it) anywhere on the screen.

Again, thanks for all the input on this.

I spent time trying different approaches but I think yours works well. I hit a wall with the way VS executes stacked effects - some types must come before others which is the reverse of what I wanted.

What is your definition of "compositing effect"?

My "definition" of compositing is combining multiple video images into one output image. In my example I used the same source video twice, once as the background and once as the overlay. However, the same approach would work with two (or more) source videos.

I used Corel's Photoimpact a lot to composite pictures and images. Often I would "crop (cut out a portion) of one image and then place it in another image. When I first tried the VS cropping effect I thought it would do a "static" crop of a video. However, the default cropping effect is a key framed transition that will crop a video over a timeframe. Once I realized this I set the location and size of the crop the same for the first and last key frame in the customixe cropping panel.

The other "gotchas" I found were:
1. In the customize cropping panel I had to de-select the "color fill option"
2. I had to use the yellow handles in the preview screen for the cropped overlay to fix the aspect ratio, size the cropped overlay, & then position the cropped overlay.
3. If you want to apply a mask frame to the cropped overlay to give it soft edges you must right click the clip on the timeline and then de-select "apply filter to alpha channel".

Again thanks for all the input

Hi

Retaining the aspect ratio / frame proportions can be a problem when cropping.

You could create your own mask, a black image with a white eclipse could be used, but any shape. added to the Mask Frames. We need to set the eclipse over our subject.

Attached is a smart package, open with X9, not sure if the mask will show so you have to add (+) it to the Mask Frames
I have placed the mask image on the timeline, so you can easily find it ?

From Chroma Key Masks add the BMP image
Apply to the overlay clip, reposition clip / resize clip.
mask frames.zip
opens using X9
(630.57 KiB) Downloaded 128 times
Oh, to copy keyframes, try right click on first keyframe.
