DVD burning
Good morning, I am using VS9.5, have created a video and am in the process of preparing to burn it to DVD. I have got to the rendering section and rendering has started. However, the bottom blue bar goes all the way but the top blue bar moves along fractionally and then stops. I get the instruction that the process has hit a problem. I can find no reason why. All preferences are selected. I would appreciate any comments or actions that would help. I selected all the clips individually as I could find no way to select them as a whole. Should I have tried ctrl. click and drag? Many thanks, Rolly.

Re: DVD burning
What do you mean you selected all the clips individually ????
once you have made a video and entered the burning module with it there is no further "clip" selection to do
can you run us through your process from the point you click on Share - then select DVD ?

Re: DVD burning
Thank you for your reply. I completed the video and went to 'Share' as I had no title to render. The 'Share' dialogue box opened and I selected the DVD icon and 'Save project to disc'. The 'Add media dialogue box' opened and the video showed in the timeline. 'Use first clip as introductory video'. Incidentally, all the 32 clips of the video showed as individual clips, not as a complete video. 'Hold shift and play preview' worked OK although shakily. 'Next', 'No menu preview required'. 'Next' 'Go to output'. I changed nothing. There was no need. 'Create disc' is ticked and recording format is 'DVD video'. I then went to 'Burn'. The dialogue box opens to inform me that 'This will take some time to render, continue' which I then activated. The 'Total progress' line, after a time, shows approximately 1cm. of blue with 3% indicated. The 'Detailed progress' line is a full blue line. I then get a dialogue box, 'Convert stop. Got some problems'. If I try again the 'Detailed box' shows full ie, a full blue line immediately, and the 'Progress line' shows approx. 1cm.
I am trying to burn a short video of 32 clips, requiring 1.30Gbs., to a 4.70Gb disc. If I select all the clips in the burn timeline and export them the complete video plays off the desk top. If I leave the time line with only the first clip selected, ie. the title clip, then this will play on the desktop as an individual clip. I assume that all the clips therefore have to be selected. Should these clips show in the timeline as a complete video?
Your assistance would be much appreciated. This is my first video for some years and I'm attempting to get it done by Christmas. Many thanks, Rolly

Re: DVD burning
Something is not correct -- even if you did not save your project before going to "Share >> DVD " ( which is bad practice anyway - you should always save a project so that you can do further editing ) - but even if you didn't there should be only one thumbnail in the timeline in the first window of the burn module
You are saying you see all 32 clips ?????
even if that is the case you do not need to select them - or do anything except use 'Next' to get to the next page - which if you have unticked "Create menu" will be the preview screen
our recommended procedure is to finish all editing - then save the project - then go to Share and create an mpeg-2 video file - check that = then when you go to the disc burn module delete everything in the timeline and make sure you import the video file you have just made - then burn your disc

Re: DVD burning
Thank you for that, I'll give it a try and see what happens. Obviously I'm doing something wrong. If it works for everyone else it should work for me!!!

Re: DVD burning
Hi
Brian that does seem odd
Rollason
Before you do share can you see video on the timelines?
After Share – Disc, that opens the burner module
Do you select the top icon for Add Media or the lower icon for Add / Edit Chapters.
I suspect the latter, that will display any chapters you have applied to the timeline and will show from your rendered video.
Now return to the edit timeline and open your project, are there any green triangles at the top of the timeline, maybe 32?

Re: DVD burning
Thank you for that last post. I tried your suggestion but it wasn't totally successful.
The project plays fine in 'Edit mode' and also when played with AVCHD selected in 'Add media' using the first clip as introductory video. The balance of the clips are still shown as individual clips. ie. not as a complete compilation although they play fine. 'Create menu' is not ticked and 'Menus and previews' is not activated.
Go to 'Next and 'video player'. 'Next' again. 'Disc type' shows DVD-R and 'Create to disc' and 'burning speed' is at maximum. On to 'Preview' and showing 'Plenty of disc space'. Proceed to 'Burn' and render. 'Total progress' immediately shows 3%. 'Detected progress' shows 50% after 2 mins. and 100% after 3 mins. 'Prepare output content' at 27% and 'video/audio multiplexing' starts. 'Detailed progress' 1% after 4 mins.
2% after 5 mins. 26% after 6 mins. 50% after 7 mins. 70% after 8 mins. 'Dispatch content to space' at 99% at 9 mins. closing the session and operation successful after approx. 10 mins. The video lengtb is about 18 mins. played back.
This does not appear to correlate with the previous posts and the video won't play using Windows Silver Video Player. It plays OK on my television but that is not much use when I wish to view the project on the computer as I'm working on it. Can you suggest some programme that I can use that will work OK on computer screen?
Once again, many thanks for your help. It's been of great assistance. Regards, Rollason

Re: DVD burning
Hi Rolly
What you describe just does not make sense and certainly I cannot replicate.
I am not saying it is not happening but difficult to understand?
Are you able to take a screen shot showing the 32 clips and attach to your post?
1 / As Brian says you should first render the project to a compliant video file using Share Mpeg2
I assume you are working with widescreen so use this template MPEG-2 (720 x 576, 16:9, 50i, 8Mbps)
The resultant video can be used to burn a DVD without any further conversions.
Does that render complete ok.
Play the file to check quality.
2 / To burn a disc, clear the timelines, starting a new project will clear the timelines.
Share Disc DVD opens the burner module – nothing on the timeline
Top Left Add Video – choose the video file made in 1 above.
3 / Why are you choosing Introductory video? That option is usually applied to a short intro video not your main movie file. Do not select introductory video.
4 / On the last window, deselect Create to Disc and select Create disc Image.
5 / After pressing Burn take note of the progress bar, if it shows Convert Title, it is wrong, that is converting the video file again, not what we want.
The burn process will create an ISO file of your movie, you can play that iso using VLC Media Player
Does that play ok?
6 / If yes you can burn the iso to disc using Tools – Burn from Disc Image.

Re: DVD burning
Thank you for that post, Trevor. I have managed to burn the video as you suggested. I don't know what was wrong previously but I've got there. Perhaps you could help me with another problem which the 'Help' manual doesn't seem to address in depth. I am trying to create labels for the discs and do all that the manual suggests but the selected picture, which is taken from the video, doesn't appear on the DVD blank in desk creation. Do I have to select the 'photo from the Timeline as I'm trying to select it from a video clip in the original folder?
Your help would be much appreciated.

Re: DVD burning Print Disc Label
Hi Rolly
I don’t use the print label feature but when I open that panel it shows the image from the clip on the burner timeline.
So you may have to do Add a video to the burner timeline, I think it may use the first frame, if that is black then that’s what you will see.
Right click the image gives the option to delete.
Top Menu gives the option to Add Image, browse the hard drive for a suitable image.
Any image should do, but I would use an image editor to create a square image at 800 x 800px (minimum size), just personal preference.
Remember the disc has a hole in the middle so any faces or details should be off centre.

Re: DVD burning
If you want to use an image from your video you just need to make sure that the image you want is showing in the preview window of the 'Create Disc' module when you open the label creator - you do not have to actually click on any thing - - UNLESS you want to use something different in which case you use the "Add Image" icon to browse to a still photo on your PC
