VS can't play Mov file. Help!

Post by jungleexplorer »

Yesterday I shot some video on my SJ4000 sports cam that records to the MOV format. I copied the 6 video files to my computer to work on them in VS. Four of the files work fine, but VS can't play two of the files. When I import that into VS, they are there, but the video is black. I thought maybe something was wrong with the video files, so I tested them by playing them in VCL Player, Quicktime, and Windows Media Player. The two files play just fine in all three. So what could be the problem here?

I am using VS X9 Ultimate

Here is a screen capture to give you a visual idea of what I am talking about. I will play the video in VLC and then import the file into VS and it will be black.

Never could figure out why this was happening so I converted the MOV file to a MP4 with Prism Video Converter. VS was able to work with the MP4 file, so that fixed the problem.

Hi

There have been some issues using Mov and Mp4 type video in the past.
Camera manufacturers bring out new cameras, tweak the mov codec and leave the video editor playing catchup.
Corel provided a series of hot fixes for X7 and X8 which seemed to cure most problems.
Seems to be now affecting X9.

It could of course be a corrupt video file recorded by your camera, as you seem to say the same cameras videos plays some ok whilst others are black.

Some things to try….a bit of a shot in the dark.

Rename the “video.MOV” to video.MP4
You can also try video.MKV

Can you provide 2 samples, a good video and a black video.
You will have to upload to a sharing site, Google Drive, DropBox, One Drive etc.
We can then test on our systems to see if we can replicate the black playback.

The Hotfix I mentioned above is simply replacing the file ulmp4lib.dll
The latest file will / should be included within X9 so probably wont make any difference.

One such forum post refers.

Contact Corel Support
If you are sure the bad video has not been corrupt in camera then you should contact Corel Support and explain the problem. And if they can replicate the problem they may even provide a new ulmp4lib.dll.

Thanks for getting back with me. As I said in my response post, I fixed the problem by converting the MOV file to MP4. I have no question that there was something different about the two files that VS could not work with, but it must have been something very minor because, VLC, Quicktime, Windows Media Player and Prism Video Converter had no problems at all with the two files in question. So, that would point back at VS, which could not open a perfectly functioning MOV for some minor reason that no other video player editor had a problem with. I am sure it had to do with something in the file, but finding out what that tiny minor thing was, is a rabbit hole I don't have time to chase. Simply put, the solution is, VS needs to be able to overcome tiny minor variations in perfectly functioning files.

I just got 60 mov's for my current project from Nikon S9900, all played black in X9. Renaming them to mp4 get VS to open it's eyes.
